NY allows Muslim prison guard to wear kufi to work

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York prison guards will be allowed to accommodate religious practices in their uniforms after settlement of a lawsuit on behalf of a Muslim prison officer, the New York Civil Liberties Union said on Wednesday.

The settlement with the New York Department of Correctional Services will allow Abdus Samad Haqq, a devout Muslim corrections officer, to wear a kufi, or skullcap, on the job after he was ordered not to wear it in 2005, according to the

NYCLU.

The union, which filed the suit in Manhattan federal court on behalf of Haqq last October, said the settlement meant other prison officers would also have religious rights in wearing their uniforms.

"New York has now abandoned its policy of refusing to accommodate the religious beliefs of correction officers," said NYCLU lawyer Christopher Dunn.

Brian Fischer, commissioner of the correctional services department, said in a statement it revised its policy "to make reasonable accommodations in the workplace when it comes to the religious beliefs and practices of its employees."

In March the U.S. Justice Department filed a similar lawsuit against the Department of Correctional Services citing Haqq's case and arguing that Americans were not required to abandon their religion when they report to work. That case is still pending.

Haqq, 53, wore the skullcap without incident for more than 10 years before he was ordered to remove it because it was not part of a sanctioned uniform.

So now all government employees can wear religious symbols, yes?

And this means that the First Amendment means what it says....nothing more and nothing less as well, right?

I’m sure when it gets jerked off his head by an inmate he’ll contact the ACLU again and have the prisoner sued.

Two weeks ago, at DFW airport outside Dallas, all the TSA screeners (idiots) except one were in strict uniform.

One, who was guarding the exit to prevent unauthorized access to the secure area was wearing her devout Muslim headscarf.

By the way, her’s is the one job in the whole screening area where she was working unsupervised and out of sight of all other TSA or LE personnel, so she could allow terrorists in without anyone knowing.

Smart

Liberalism and its weakness represent a mental disorder that is killing the integrity of, and respect for, this country. You would think we would have learned from Europe —

There are times in this world where you have to present a united front.....prison guard I would think is one of those.

Drawing any attention to one individual affects the entire unit and its enforcement abilities.

Breech of uniform is not just a distraction its danger to ALL guards.

Law suits, controversy, problems arising, etc. That’s what you get when you hire these people.

Of course the NYCLU would be right there if an employee was told they couldn't’t wear a cross with their uniform because as a state employee they would be endorsing a religion.Yes I could see them helping to secure religious liberties!

So now it’s okay that I dress in the traditional clothes of my home land, Caucasia? I will then be able to frolic with my people....

“..so she could allow terrorists in without anyone knowing.”

All that will be corrected after the next massacre.

So I guess the denizens of NY prisons might soon be seeing guards running around dressed like this:

There’s a line in Tokyo Drift that goes, ‘The nail that sticks out-gets hammered’. I like that line in this instance.

>>>All that will be corrected after the next massacre.

The problem is, they enter the system at DFW, fly to ATL, go into the bathroom, remove change clothes, put on wigs, all without leaving the secure area.

Then they fly to Tampa, where they change their look again.

Then they commandeer a plane headed for LaGuardia,,, and crash it into Shea Stadium 2 miles from the airport.

Who done it?!?!?
