Felonies are typically defined as those crimes for which the individual charged can receive more than one year imprisonment. Nearly all felonies are controlled by state law and state courts. Originally the Federal courts were to handle crimes such as piracy at sea, treason and enforcement of such laws gas were needed to allow the federal government to perform its constitutional duties.
With the expansion under the guise of th commerce clause and the general welfare clause the feds have enacted a whole new level of laws.
Particularly onerous to me are those that allow Federal prosecution of civil rights violatons after a person has been either convicted or exonerated for the same acts in state courts. The RICO acts are also Petey bad as applied.
Ahh, great stuff. It's been said a thousand times before, but I'll say it again: just amazing what one can learn in this forum if one just pays attention and asks questions.
Many thanks to all who replied!
