I couldn't agree more. Removing the poor from the tax rolls was a significant mistake. It created (just as the Dems intended) a large class of Americans who will always vote for tax increases, because they don't have to pay them, and are often the recipients of tax-funded govt handouts.
In national elections, I believe that is the way it should be. If you pay no taxes or indeed receive support from the government, you should not vote. Exempt the elderly and the infirm, and give an alternative poll tax to allow folks that really want to vote that pay no federal income tax.
Of course, every lib/dem would have a heart attack and die if anyone in the mainstream ever suggested it.
Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, "Taxation is the price of citizenship."
So for people to be considered equal citizens, and thus have an equal vote, they need to pay taxes equal to that of everyone else.
