Cop killer executed in Tennessee (Only the third execution in TN since 2000)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A man convicted of killing a Memphis police officer in 1981 was executed early Wednesday after a court rejected defense pleas for more time to examine newly revised execution protocols.

Philip Workman, whose execution had been delayed on five prior occasions, became Tennessee's third lethal injection since 2000.

The Tennessee Supreme Court rejected a final defense request for more time to challenge the way the state carries out its three-chemical injection procedure.

A federal judge halted Workman's execution last week over concerns about the revisions, but a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted that temporary restraining order Monday.

Several motions to the 6th Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to stop the execution on a variety of grounds were denied Tuesday night.

Gov. Phil Bredesen imposed a 90-day moratorium on executions in February after an Associated Press review of the state's execution procedure manual found it was a jumble of conflicting instructions that mixed lethal injection instructions with those for the old electric chair.

The state on April 30 released its revised execution guidelines, which still include the injection of a lethal cocktail that opponents have called needlessly cruel.

Well, it's good to see justice meted out. Since this is only the third execution since reinstatement, it's relatively momentous. There's lots of people on Tennessee's death row, so there should be more. The liberals ain't gonna like this.

Justice delayed is justice denied — its been 26 years since he did the crime.

Well, Phillip, how did it feel?

That is quite un-Christian of you. He paid his debt, you should leave him be. God will decide.

That statement reminds me of that idiot Percy on “The Green Mile”.

Once someone has paid their price to the state the only one they have to answer to is God.

He’s been executed, he’s square with man’s house.

LMAO!!!
A good cartoonist could have a blast with this.

Anyway, I'm glad the state got it all straightened out. Hopefully, as time goes by, the executioners can fine-tune their work to perfection. Keep 'em coming.

A sad day for all concerned. But it had to be done.

Now the leftist murderer lovers and enablers will swing their klieg lights onto their next cause celebre. And as per usual, it won’t be the prisoner that they care about. And the victim of the prisoner is always the last name heard suppurating from their mouths.

No, the template is always the same. Delay. Obfuscate. Muddy. Delay. Use the good will of the public against the public. You know the tune.

And yet, the appeals process is a vital and necessary part of the justice system. And it is also vital that justice be tempered with mercy. But when the left transforms it into all mercy and no justice, its like another long drawn out shotgun blast to the face of the victims. And twenty six years is clearly too long for justice to be carried through for someone who was so obviously and legally and justifiably found to be guilty of killing officer Ronald Oliver in 1981.

Workman stuck a gun in the face of a Wendy’s cashier, (who was probably making about $2.60 at the time), and threatened to kill that person if he didn’t get the money he thought he desreved. Then along come two police officers. A gunfight ensues. Officer Oliver gave his life to protect society from the likes of Workman.

Justice? Can there be actual justice for Ronald Oliver? Justice would be having it not ever happen. Justice would be not having a drugged up Workman. Justice would be a system of morality that was not so weakened, only to be replaced by the glorification of a consequence free drug and sex culture, that snared not only Workman, but so many others.
No. All we got was a certain measure of justice. Workman off the streets. Broken families, and a never to return, officer Oliver.
Thanks left. Whats that about freeing society from the bonds of a G-d based morality?

You feel that delayed justice is appropriate then.

First of all, where in the heck did you get that from my post. I wrote that one should not mock the dead. The guy paid his debt.

Secondly, since the death penalty is permanent, I do not see any reason to be too hasty about imposing it - unless you agree with the French Socialist candidate about how great China's "swift" justice system is.

Third, I also don't see how spending 26 years on death row can be viewed as not being punished. It ain't a cruise ship. I would personally rather be executed immediately. That much time in prison would be like being slowly tortured.

capital punishment is debatable. Selective, preferential capital punishment is unthinkable.

I will tell you what: That was completely uncalled for and I consider it abuse. I will take a lot, and have never once reported abuse, but you have zero reason to be given me that kind of talk. Congrats on being my first.

Should have gone to New Jersey to kill a cop.

That’s 4 in 40 plus years...there are about 100 more to go to clean out death row and bring justice to the victims and their families.

Personally I think a murderer can *never* “repay his debt” to society. What bunk.

It would be better to give them the paralyzing drug and then let them lay there overnight to think about their crime and the victims.

The next day would come the lethal injection.

Workman and his lawyers have been tying up the court system for years, complaining that he might feel some pain during his execution. I was just wondering if he actually did.
