Q&A with prospective Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson

NEWPORT BEACH – Actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson may be many conservatives' great hope to run for president, but he's keeping his cards close to his chest both in terms of his plans and in terms of specific policy positions. After his speech to the Lincoln Club at the Balboa Bay Club on Friday, I sat down with him to see just where he stands in terms of throwing his hat in the ring – he hasn't yet – and on some key issues. Below are excerpts. You can find the full transcript at the Total Buzz blog, blogs.ocregister.com/buzz/

Q. What are the factors you're weighing before making the decision whether or not to run?

A. Whether or not the man meets the times. Whether or not my feel for what's going on in the country is an accurate one. And what kind of feedback I get from the public statements I make.

Q. In 2000, you were national campaign chairman for John McCain, and have been said to share many of his conservative views. How would distinguish yourself from McCain in terms of policy?

A. I wouldn't right now. There's plenty of time for that. We agree on a lot of things. A Republican, especially a conservative Republican – you're going to have a large group of people you line up with on most votes. John and I certainly fit that category. But we have different views on some issues. We'll have a good discussion about it. But John is my friend and will remain my friend, regardless of what we do.

I like this part:

Q.So there's been some disappointment with what's going on in the country and what's going on with the Republican Party.

A. Well, if anyone thinks everything is just right, they shouldn't run for president. They ought to want to do big things to improve the country. I think that's certainly true in my case.

Proof positive that he is running.

Run Fred Run!!!

How about "Still figgerin' out wether or not I want the job"?

Run or do not run, Fred. Indecisiveness doesn't look good and you've got less than 9 months to raise the $$$$millions that you will need.

You’ve posted on enough of the Fred threads to know full well that no announcement can or will be made until after the L&O season.

Fred has been running for some time now. Virtually every day he issues a position paper, a radio address, TV interviews or a speech to a prominent group, not to mentioned he's seen on TV programs several times a week.. He's in the news every day and is climbing in the polls. He's in the comfortable position of not having to share the limelight with anyone.

I think he's running a very astute campaign.

I am so 100% behind him on immigration. Secure the border first. THEN we can sit down and figure out what to do with the millions of illegals already here.
