Polygraphs are unreliable (having no scientific basis) and are easily fooled. See AntiPolygraph.org for the truth about lie detectors.

There are wags that say the machines may be defeated by a medication and/or lots of practice. Sociopaths like Bill and Hillary Clinton take great pride in their ability to mislead everybody all the time. The U.S. government even trains covert operatives how to fake out machines. As a highly experienced lawyer, Sandy Burglar has had a lot of practice lying under pressure. In foreign cultures, people are often rewarded greatly for lying with great skill: "The most skillful liar wins." Most people who grew up in Russia or Iran feel no form of guilt or nervousness when confronted by a machine. The threat of using machines to detect lying puts most Americans into a state of great unease; the site of the MACHINE! itself pushes some into total panic. There are very good reasons why lie detector evidence is not admissible in court.

Personally, I prefer the use of medications under the supervision of physicians. Sandy Burglar would be made to tell the truth. Then he would voluntarily sign a statement of what he had done to subvert the U.S. and admit the complicity of others. They he would forget his interview under medication but and remember signing his statement voluntarily.
