WASHINGTON President Bush, a leader known for his informality, welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to the White House Monday with an uncharacteristic display of high pomp.
"We did sort of have to convince him a little bit" to opt for the white-tie dinner, first Lady Laura Bush said Monday of her and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's efforts to talk Bush into hosting the most formal dinner the White House can offer.
The British monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, are being greeted later Monday morning with a 21-gun salute and a parade by the U.S. Army's Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps attended by 7,000 guests on the White House's South Lawn.
An exclusive few will return in white tie and tails for the state dinner among 13 damask-clothed tables set with gold-trimmed ivory china and gilded silver candelabras.
"We're very excited to host Her Majesty," Mrs. Bush said Monday morning on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"We had the opportunity to be here the last time she was here for a state dinner (hosted by the first President Bush in 1991) ... and we're so thrilled to have the chance to host her and to show her the strong affection the American people have for the British," she said.

Only if Enrico Palazzo is performing.
No, not royalty. Thats a still image from a British satirical film called Monty Python.
Errr, we DO have a history of thousands of years. I didn’t mean India, as you suggested, I thought I was clear. Sea Salt? What are you talking aboot pal?
“The key word being “Former”. Some of us intend to keep it that way.”
OK. You must be feeling insecure if you use bravadacio to show your strength. I wish you all the success in the world making sure that the UK doesn’t about face and try and re-colonise the errmm, colonies. Though I may suggest its a fools errand, as there is no way that we have an designs on your States. Why would we? Its far more cost effective have another government run the place and we can just make money through trade and all that. But of course, don’t let me keep you from your ramparts, I think I can hear the bugle call of the redcoats marching on Fort Worthless.
I didn’t know we got marked on our punctuation and grammer, but I think your referring to revolution, which I spelled out fo-en-et-ee-calli, for your convenience.
Cheers
Put it whatever way you want man, its your call. I think though that calling the US the only former dominion to surpass the UK is a bit off. What about India? A billion or so people, an emerging super-economy thats going to rival China’s, nuclear weapons. These guys will be one of the super-powers of the next 100 years or so.
The antagonism is all on your side of the pond though, my reponse was only intended to irritate some of your more anti-UK posters here on FR (and there are loads mate). My point is that the revolution IS a thing of the past. But here on a thread that SHOULD be looking at the sate visit to the US of our Queen , I read anti-UK posts. There are those that simply seek out UK based stories and then post garbage on them, just wanting to start a fight.
As for cultural superiority, you may be right, but its not for you to say really. We DO have the longest history of all of the English speaking nations, therein the most culture. Not an offence man, just plain fact.
“With all the vile enemies in the world today, the English speaking world should be sticking together anyway, after all we are very closely related.”
Your right man, but the argument shouldn’t be made towards me. Make it to the anti-UK gang that chase up UK stories. We are allies, so maybe you should start behaving like one. Or perhaps we will find some new ones.
What do you mean, kicked our butts?
Britain won the war of independence! We got rid of you :)
Why should we? They are cheaper by far than having to pay for a Presidency.
Well, it should be obvious to her, considering that the White House is not her "colonial residence". And no Union Jack on the soldiers she inspected.
No I dont think restitution is in order at all.
Everyone quotes the British burning the white house, and some even demand “restitution”. No one ever mentions WHY the usually civilised British indulged in this bit of china smashing.
It was retaliation for the US trashing of the city of York in upper Canada (now Toronto). You got off lightly too. One of the joint commanders of the British expedition had a real downer on “yankees” and wanted to destroy Washington and sow the ground with salt, but his colleague talked him out of it (”Oh no old boy. Can’t do that...making war on civilians? Not the done thing!”) So they just trashed the public buildings.
LOL its funny when you limeys get all uppity.
Must suck being nothing more than a crappy little island off a dead end backwater place like old europe.
You’ve clearly never been here then, its Old Skool pal. I went to Uni in the US, and I like the place, its good fun. My gripe aint against the nation, just a couple of you boys ;)
Must be a riot to wind Brits up. Really man.
If we’re old europe, when was the new one discovered? Someone discover a new continent?
Never! The Queen is who we are and is the safeguard of our constitution and our sovereignty. God bless her.
Can you get Paul Revere in the picture: “The British are coming ..”
“I just hope she remembers that we kicked their butts.”
Maybe, instead of “The Worthless Miracle,” you should call yourself “The Classless Miracle.”
What the Queen remembers, personally, is that we helped save their butts. Of course, since I have class, I would prefer to put it more gently. But maybe saying “butts” will help you to understand ...
The anti-UK posters on FReep are a disgrace. Fortunately, they are also a small minority, just as they’re small-brained. The alliance of the English-speaking peoples is a real thing to most Americans, and to all real conservatives.
In 1940-41, these Britain-haters would have been shrugging off the Nazi threat — and not caring whether they were right or not.
Yeah, that too.
Glad to see this cretin getting the response he deserves.
