Al and Tipper Gore didn't mind destroying the lives of a number of people in the music industry (including those of retail clerks who sold "the wrong albums" to vice squads).
Their mid-1980s Senate records burning campaign is all but a bitter memory. MTV-Viacom and the Zappa kids have endorsed Al Gore. In the end, the Gores destroyed lives over a political issue that didn't matter much to them. But it did put Gore on the national stage. His father, Sen. Al Gore Sr., had seen fellow Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver rise to the VP nomination after some Senate hearings on the influences of juvenile delinquincy (like comic books) back in the 1950s.
