Generational Tensions

Susan Eisenhower is an accomplished professional, the president of an international consulting firm. She also happens to be Ike's granddaughter—and in that role, she's the humble torchbearer for moderate "Eisenhower Republicans." Increasingly, however, she says that the partisanship and free spending of the Bush presidency—and the takeover of the party by single-issue voters, especially pro-lifers—is driving these pragmatic, fiscally conservative voters out of the GOP.

Now they are threatening to leave if they are unsuccessful at tossing all those dreadful social conservatives out of "their" party. This article says they want to return to the good old Eisenhower days, but I suspect they would be happy to roll the party back to the good old permanent minority days of the Ford administration, or anything pre-Reagan.

Yes, I saw that one too.

The dirty little secret is they've been voting Democrat since '96, and it took them 10 yrs. to get enough numbers along with the Democrats and fraudulent votes to effect an outcome as they did in '06.

I haven’t read the whole article, but these “rock-ribbed Republicans” sound awful Democrat-like. Besides, since does being a relative of Ike or T.R. make you any more relevant?

If a member of the Truman family voted Republican, would that signal a shift away from the Democrats?

It's THEIR party, they inheirited it, doncha know? And now they're doing their best to wrest it from the hands of those awful Reaganites who've taken it over and turned it into a majority party! Failing that, they'll just join the other party. Yes, they are really "rock-rib" Republicans, but count them as anything but conservative.

Well, the Republicans need a good candidate. Their biggest problem is that all the front runners have flaws that put off their base. All they have going for them now is the weakness of the opposition: can anyone really think Americans would elect the congenitally unlikeable Hillary or the ingenue demagogue Obama?

That said, this article is just another MSM attempt to declare the Republicans dead. People who favor the industrial scale, for-profit killing of innocent early stage humans have been democrats for a long time. People who believe it wrong to resist Islamic terror—they object to the war on terror’s “cost”—have been democrats for a long time. What Newsweek really wants is two soulless, defeatist major political parties, one perhaps a bit less socialist than the other. The fact is “moderates” only weaken the Republicans. We would be much better off without the likes of Snow, Specter and Ms. Eisenhower.

"wishful thinking"

Big Media has been throwing a tantrum about social conservatives ever since Reagan was elected. They still can't understand how anyone would vote for a socially conservative candidate even though Republicans have been dominating the prez elections since Reagan. And BushI would have won in '92 if Perot wouldn't have run despite his (Bush) tax-raising gaffes. After more than a quarter century liberals are still astonished that many Americans have conservative social values.
