Rudy Giuliani portrayed himself as the heir to Ronald Reagan at the first Republican debate last night, talking tough on terrorism - but struggling to present a clear and consistent position on abortion.
Giuliani, who strongly supported abortion rights during his eight years as mayor, said he would not object to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision affirming abortion.
"It would be OK to repeal it," said Giuliani, who is courting key anti-abortion voters in the GOP primaries.
But he then added that "it would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as a precedent" - meaning upholding Roe vs. Wade.
"I think the court has to make that decision - and then the country can deal with it."
Giuliani was the only one of the 10 candidates onstage at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., to say it would be OK if Roe were upheld.

What happened was the leadership’s lack of morality.
This is kind of what I meant by returning to conservatism, which isn’t the same as religious conservatism. Maybe I’m on the wrong site if I’m looking for conservative talk... ;)
Example:
"Thou shall not kill." vs the death penalty.
"If a man strike you on one cheek turn the other" vs War.
The term "Christian nation" is an oxymoron. A state must take actions 24/7 to maintain domestic peace and tranquility. Necessary, even imperative, actions like capital punishment and waging war contradict the core Christian ethical requirements. Thus, in my spiritual tradition war is never, ever, ever, justified within the realm of kingdom ethics (those actions commanded or prohibited in the here and now by the New Testament and binding upon believers until the Second Coming). See Jean-Michel Hornus, It Is Not Lawful For Me To Fight: Early Christian Attitudes Toward War, Violence, and the Sate, and John Howard Yoder, The Politics of Jesus (Eerdmans:1972, 260 pgs.).
There is no Godly blessing to be pronounced over the killing of fellow humans. There is no strand of New Testament teaching or slivers of proof-text verses that put a Christian stamp of approval upon war. War is hell. War is of the devil. And anyone who thinks that there are or can be rules for the civilized, organized, lethal infliction of deadly force is delusional. The object of war is the utter annihilation and destruction of the enemy. War crimes and crimes against humanity are what the victors charge against the losers.
A people can be moral...but a government?
It’s not really fair to single out Rudy as saying “I’d be the next Reagan,” because everybody at the debate was saying that.
The reason you are free to be so wrong is because of this nation's Christian Heritage and our consequent belief in freedom of conscience.
Law cannot exist without morality. Law comes from morality.
I would venture to say that Roe v Wade, for one, puts a lie to that statement...among other laws.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
An immoral law is no law.
Don't tell me...tell the unborn dead.
Anyway, I'm outta here for now.
You are the one who wants to separate morality from the government. A “woman’s choice” is the result of that kind of retreat from morality. Begone.
A good part of it yes it was. But that wasn't all. It was a willful abandonment of the Constitution by quite a few Congressmen and senators which unfortunately brought us to a national crisis because they refused to impeach a president unfit for office and I'm not talking just about his sex life. Checks and Balances failed because congress failed to uphold their oath. Not just the DEMs but a large number of GOP also. That issue has yet to be resolved.
I'll not go into it but the power play for Newt's job as speaker has some rather strange twist even as related to the 1996 convention. His personal failures gave them the ammo they needed to get him to step down I'm guessing.
This called for a mega barf alert.
Just a little background on that scripture there: In biblical times that was a Hebraism term. If you “destroyed the law” it meant you were misinterpreting the law. If you “fulfilled the law” it meant you were giving the correct interpretation of it.
Just within this thread we have a great example of that. Scripture says; “Thou Shalt Not Kill” - ok, then why does God go around telling His people to KILL all these people in the bible? The correct interpretation of “Thou Shalt Not Kill” is actually “Thou Shalt Not Murder.” (Premediated act of revenge type killing. Like Cain/Abel) That is just one example of gazillions.
Good post.... for the record..i’m still not sure who i support in the primaries....i know who i don’t support...Rudy and Mitt are too slick for my taste...FT, i’m still looking at....i’m one of the few conservatives on FR that questions “free” trade and such.... I have thought about J Robinson’s position that if Rudy is elected, it will shut out conservatives in the Republican party for some time....I can’t say that i wouldn’t vote for Rudy if he was running against Hillary...but i’m not that scared of Hillary in the WH...it would cause a $hit storm in the Republican party and they might just find their soul...just my rambling opinion.... ;)
Freepmail me to be added or removed from this ping list.
The disgrace whore Rudy Giuliani is at it again people....
Ruti's a pathetic Kafkaesque figure----trying to metamorphize himself into "Reagan."
IMO the most despicable Ruti strategy is to ignore and/or "laugh" off his blunders. The "Oh, that Rudy's just kidding again" strategy.
Case in point: Ruti/Juti calculatedly announced Juti's Cabinet plans on ABC's 20/20. As a ferocious backlash emerged, Ruti/Juti announced they had a good "laugh" over the Cabinet idea.
Ruti figures to buy votes by posing as a well-meaning man who is merely "confused" and "forgetful" who "didn't really mean'" what he said.........
Rudy's so-called "mistakes" -----his incessant flip-flopping back and forth on abortion, gun control----his retractions, denials, and nuancing of issues----are all dedicated campaign strategies; con games worked out in Rudeo Campaign Central, designed to dupe voters. The game is to con voters on all sides of an issue into thinking Ruti is on their side.
The intrinsic evil Ruti brings to American politics cannot be underestimated.
LOL----so true. His weirdness is legendary and was never more apparent than at the debate.
Didn't we all savor Ruti's "deer-in-the-headlights" moment----when he was asked to define Shiite from Sunni?
It was as if Ruti was embarrassed that he actually knew the answer........and couldn't quite figure out if knowing was good or bad for his image.
The look on Ruti's face was priceless.
Bull Crap!!!!
Thanks NapkinUser...
And Hillary will be the next William F. Buckley.
