To your understanding, what is a true conservative?

I’m starting to wonder what a true conservative is.

A Thompson or a Hunter, most likely.

Every story on Rudy at the debate on the news points out that he waffles on abortion. That is what will be remembered about his performance.

Rudy's early lead based on his, "America's Mayor" image will fade.

To me, a true conservative is a very simple creature: One who believes in the primacy of the individual. All laws and government actions should be aimed at supporting the individual's self-determined way of life, with the condition that his/her way of life does not infringe on another's.

Instead of government flowing from the top down (Washington dictating to the individual), the power should descend from the individual, to the local government, then state, then federal government.

All the issues we might discuss--guns, speech, etc.--would flow from this basic idea. The government should enable the individual to make his way through life with the least amount of interference (which would include taxing him to "enable" others to pursue THEIR way of life--freedom FROM government interference will do more than government programs to enable one to live an independent life).

A true conservative is not one who is against there being a federal government, or a state or local government, but he is one who wants these structures to do the bare minimum necessary to allow all citizens to pursue happiness.

I could put down a laundry list, but I think a lot of conservatives have forgotten what conservatism truly is. For one thing, it's not about religion.

I agree. But religion is one of out most basic freedoms and one that seems to be under relentless attack from all sides, including government.

Rooty Toot cracked me up. He kept referring to Reagan as though they are anywhere comparable on any issues. Rooty squirmed about during that debate a lot. I hope they hound him more on abortion, gun control, gay marriage, and immigration during the next debates. All he ever falls back on is NY and 9/11. He sounds like a broken record that can’t say anything else without flipping around because it will damage his reputation.

This one is worth the stop Rudy list!

Well said, and I agree with most of your summary.

In essence, it is a way of life by self governance. Living by the conviction of fundamental principles “protected by our Bill of Rights”. Also living by and upholding the freedoms provided by our Constitution. "For one thing, it’s not about religion.”

Despite whether or not you’re religious, to say this is to ignore the reason our forefathers left Great Britain, or to dismiss the Mayflower Compact, or the words penned in our very own Constitution. This is not to say that to be non-religious and a conservative is a contradiction.

Please don't misunderstand, I'm not talking about restricting freedom of religion, or ignoring the obvious to anyone with a brain fact that ours is a Christian nation. As you point out, religious freedom is one of our basic freedoms (as is freedom from religion).

All I'm saying is that many supposed conservatives don't seem to be able to look at these issues without putting God in the mix, when we are talking about the way our government is set up and how it works in purely political, practical terms.

“I think the court has to make that decision and then the country can deal with it,” Giuliani said.

I'm not ignoring the religious reasons why this country was created. It's just not useful or germain to mix religion into the debate in many cases.

We can win all arguments with the opposition without introducing views of God into the debate, which gives the libs an out to label conservatives as religious wackos. Conservatives can be as religious as they like; but when debating such issues as abortion, we can win the argument without bringing religion into the mix, which makes many who might be on our side dismiss us.

It shows how shameless Rudy is. It's outrageous,,,absolutely outrageous.

I agree. I've been quite surprised by all of this -- I started all of this by thinking that Giuliani was a good guy with whom I disagreed on some issues. But this penchant for saying things that are diametrically opposed to his documented record, and not expecting anyone to catch him at it? It reminds me a whole lot of the 'toon. I'm not one who thinks that Giuliani is exactly like Clinton (although I could make an argument that Giuliani is more competent, and thus, more dangerous). But in this particular way, it's starting to appear that his approach is almost identical: the big, shameless lie, followed by demonization of anyone who calls you on it. Yikes.

I agree with you on your view of what a conservative is (or at least, I agree with you on a politician’s ideal values, since there will never be agreement on the definition of conservative). Do you support Fred Thompson? He is by far the closest to what you describe, from what I can tell.
