The Perfect Pair? (Hagel and Bloomberg Sighted on Dinner Date)
The Politico ^ | May 2, 2007 | Jonathan Martin

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- As the 10 GOP candidates gear up for their first debate tomorrow night here, two other Republicans with potential White House ambitions had dinner 2,300 miles away.

In an eyebrow-raising move, Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- both independent-leaning Republicans -- supped together at the see-and-be-seen Palm Restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C, according to another diner.

That the two would share a meal together would alone be noteworthy, but that it would come on the night before their party's first debate and at such a conspicuous venue is downright mischevious.

Said our spy: "Seems like the Independent ticket to me."

E-mails to spokesmen for the two were not immediately returned.

UPDATE: Hagel spokesman Mike Buttry declined to comment on if Hagel and Bloomberg talked about the 2008 race. "Private conversation," said Buttry, who noted that the two have "known each other for a long time." Just for the halibut, though, Buttry did allow that the fish Hagel dined on "was excellent."

Maybe they were talking about a Bloomberg/Hagel or Hagel/Bloomberg Independent ticket. They would be lucky to pull in 2% of the vote, 1% from each major party.

I don’t think the grave dangers posed by a Bloomberg/Hagel indy ticket, with all of Bloomberg’s millions (billions?) behind it, should be too lightly dismissed. Look at how Ross Perot twice helped Bill Clinton to victory. It would only be a spoiler ticket, to be sure, but if it captured even a few percent of the vote that could easily be enough to swing 2008 to the ‘RATS (assuming it would probably hurt Republicans more than it would hurt the ‘RATS among Independents).

For Bloomberg and Hagel, they would not have a prayer of victory so this would be an ego-fest on a national scale.

Bloomberg endorsed and financed Hillary in many ways reminiscent of George Soros’ methods

This could be an attempt to deny the Republican Presidential nominee 270 electoral votes and toss it into the democrat controlled House of Representatives

Bloomie is a little self-annointed limo-lib Socialist Emperor whose worth has somehow now jumped from 6 billion to 13 billion and a full audit would put him in prison

Name 1 Republican who would vote for either Hagel or Bloomberg. They are both RINOs and more likely to take votes from the Democrat nominee than the Republican.

Don’t know what is newsworthy about this, unless the two are gay lovers.

Bloomberg would head the ticket because he's got the money that would finance the run.

But I'm thinking a Bloomberg/Hagel ticket would get a lot more Democrat votes than Republican ones.

I would definitely encourage Big Mike and the Chuckster (there's your bumper sticker, right there) to get in the race.

No, "mischievous".

I didn’t say Republicans (though some RINOs might), I said Independents.... if ‘Rat voters stick together (and they almost always do), then any Republican nominee will need to win more of the Independent vote than the ‘Rat nominee does, and that is where a Bloomberg/Hagel ticket might hurt, even if they only get a few percent in a close election.

I cannot fathom how this will draw Pub votes away. I can see some NE voters perhaps being fooled into the Bloom. scenario but Hagel? And just which one would top the ticket? Both are a bit too chic and prideful to take 2nd place. Nah, this will not fly and hopefully we will see Nader try again plus any other whining Dem, say Al Sharpton.
