The Roman Emperor Hadrian named the region Palestine around 100 AD to further infuriate the Jews. The name was derived from the Philistines, the old adversary of the Jews.

I had never thought of the etymology of Palestinian from Philistine. Makes sense to me. Thanks.

The land was called Palestine, but the people have never called themselves palestinians. That is, until fairly recently.

You are correct. It was a “region”, not a country or a people. I find it interesting that even the Arabs don’t want these people. Even Jordan has them in detainment camps and won’t let them enter into any of their government decisions.
