NEW YORK A young mother's car left out of gear accidentally rolled over her only son and killed him, a year after her soldier husband was killed in Iraq, relatives and police said.
"It's a tragedy for all my family," said Evelyn Mercedes, 65, the soldier's grandmother. "My grandson dies. Now, this happens to the baby."
Christopher Mercedes, who turned 1 last month, slipped from his mom's arms as she got out of the sport utility vehicle that began rolling because it was in neutral gear rather than park, police said.
"She was hysterical, crying out, 'Somebody help me _ he's all I have,'" said neighbor Olga Rodriguez.
Witnesses, including an off-duty firefighter, said they tried unsuccessfully to revive the boy.
"The child wasn't breathing," said the firefighter, Luis Cruz. "I began rescue breaths. I lost the pulse."

Ok, just read the full story. It was his child, although the timeline seems a little weird. Wife was already pregnant when husband was killed, that was a year ago and the child just turned one month old. What am I missing?
The article clearly states: "Christopher Mercedes, who turned 1 last month, . . . "
His wife could have got preganant the night he left, carried for an extra amount of time...etc.
What you said.
As SHE’s getting out, not as she’s getting HIM out.
When you remove your child from a car seat, are you usually standing next to the car, or are you in the car?
She may have taken him out of the car seat before getting out of the car. If that’s the case he would have been in her arms when she got out of it. Not unusual.
I don’t have kids, so I don’t know much, but when I have taken my nieces out of their car seats, I am standing in the driveway next to the car, not sitting in the car. Maybe I’m doing it wrong.
From the Link on POST 63....
A two-year-old toddler was struck and killed by his mother's Jeep Thursday afternoon. The freak accident occurred outside their home in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx, when Bricy Mercedes was getting son Christopher out of his carseat.
From the Post: Holding him in her arms, she opened the front door and reached across the passenger seat to grab a bag - but the bag knocked the gearshift into neutral, a source said.
The car started rolling and the momentum caused the front door to push her over. She fell and dropped Christopher.
I don’t think there’s necessarily a “right” or “wrong” way. No one expects a car to roll. I wasn’t there but it may have been a terrible chain reaction. Maybe as she was getting out the car rolled, she reacted & the child slipped from her arms.
The very same thing could have happened had she been standing in the driveway next to the car. They roll when they roll. It doesn’t always happen as you’re getting out. I’ve seen parked cars suddenly roll. It sounds like what happened here is simply a terrible tragedy.
This doesn’t pass the smell test.
There is nothing worse than a freak accident like this.
Poor family.
RIP little guy.
No one did anything wrong. Freak accident happen.
It’s just the way it is as tragic as it can be.
I dare any human on this forum to tell me the mother did what she did out of malice or uncaring.
That is just bullshit.
We are talking 5 seconds people.... 5 seconds...
But some fellow freepers would have handled those seconds better...that is what I learned today.

Rest in Peace
Christopher
bedolido, My prayers go up for all who now mourn the passing of Christopher and his daddy.
Blessings,

If you want on/off my prayer ping list, please let me know. All requests happily honored.
I have no words other than thank you to the family for the soldier and I hold him in high regard. I am sorry for the child - children dying makes me sick.
There is actually a word in the dictionary for this and it is called "ACCIDENT". No federal inquiry required........just prayers for the mom.
Did you read the story? It is more than tragic.
Prayers going up for comfort and peace that only God can give, even when we cannot understand or comprehend the 'why' of it.
