Today, Detroit City Council members will consider a proposal to make the Motor City a “sanctuary city” with a “don’t ask, don’t tell” mandate to prohibit police officers from asking about immigration status without criminal cause.
If Detroit acts on this proposal, it will join more than 30 other major cities that already have similar mandates.
Meanwhile, Congress has yet to re-open debate on immigration reform after abandoning proposals last year after an agreement could not be reached to secure the border without creating a path to citizenship that would have given amnesty to illegal aliens.
Sanctuary city policies defy guidelines from the 9/11 Commission Report, which called on state and local authorities to help federal agencies crack down on illegal immigration. On page 390 it said that, “There is a growing role for state and local law enforcement agencies [for the enforcement of immigration law]. They need more training and work with federal agencies so that they can cooperate more effectively with those federal authorities in identifying terrorist suspects.”
Detroit City Council President Kenneth Cockrel, Jr. doesn’t think his city’s police officers have any obligation to uphold federal immigration law. He told the Detroit Free Press, “If you’re a police officer and pulling someone over for a traffic stop, why do you need to see their immigration papers? That’s not the responsibility of the police force, that’s the responsibility of federal law enforcement to enforce immigration laws.”

These ‘sanctuary cities’ should have to give up any federal funding for social services, public schools, etc. If they want to ‘host’ illegal aliens, then let them pay for it themselves.

Exactly! And churches that want to offer sanctuary should lose tax free status. As soon as they get involved with something political or illegal, they should lose tax exempt status.

Any city,county or state that refuses to enforce INS laws should lose serious amounts of Federal $$$ until they agree to cooperate.
And so the socialists begin their fake effort at compassion. The real issue is that they make themselves a sanctuary so they can then swindle the federal government in providing them more money for services. They use the illegals to prop up their declining population counts and thus obtain more federal tax dollars for services.
In addition, organizations like the United Way provide them with millions more as local agencies “show” how many people they are now providing services to.
It’s a scam by anti-American liberals who have no regard for law and order. We either enforce ALL the agreed upon laws of this country, or we ALL get to pick and choose which ones we want to follow.
For example, I am thinking of personally designating a certain road in my city a “sanctuary” and because I have so designated it I will be able to drive whatever speed I want!
I agree with above poster, any city making such a declaration, or that does not enforce the laws should be completely cut off from federal funds of any kind.
And large cities like L.A. are gonna have one hellofa race war before too long...it’s already brewing in L.A. between Hispanics & Blacks! These illegals are not only taking away jobs of Blacks & American Hispanics but they are also driving the wage scales down; not to mention the “quality of life” in the neighborhoods...schools, hospitals and crime!
While politicians sit on their hands...only interested in getting reelected...they may all be in for a rude awakening come 11/2008! Throw the bums out...all of ‘em!
The politicians are doing all they can do to help start a race war. I’m extremely disappointed in the Republicans. I would have thought they would be patriots and attempt to save the nation from the invasion and the demonrats, but as you say, ‘their hands are under their butts’. There are enough Nero’s fiddling in congress to now hear the vile sound and see the fires all across the land.
