This is from the same Washington Post blog section as above, except is a thread on the debates and Terri. There is plenty of commentary on Terri and her Legacy on this blog...

............................

Frontrunners on the Terri Schiavo Case

The three frontrunning candidates all said that they thought the Republican-controlled Congress had made a mistake in weighing in on whether Terri Schiavo should live or die.

Here's an excerpt from each of their responses:

Romney: "I think we should generally make the family make the decision...The decision of Congress to get involved was a mistake."

McCain: "This is a very difficult issue...In retrospect we should have taken some more time and looked at it more carefully...we probably acted too hastily."

Giuliani: "The better place to decide that...is in front of a court."

This comes from U.S. News and World Report...

In a marked departure from last week's Democratic presidential debate, the differences among candidates were most pronounced on social issues. In addition to abortion rights, those issues included federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and whether it was proper for Congress to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case in 2005.

On some hot-button issues, including the Schiavo intervention, the seven second-tier candidates attempted to portray themselves as more in line than the front-runners with the GOP's base. Giuliani, Arizona Senator McCain, and former Massachusetts Governor Romney all said or implied that Congress was wrong to intervene in the case, while Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and California Rep. Duncan Hunter defended the move.

"Even if it's in that difficult moment that she's in at that point in time, that life is sacred," Brownback said of Schiavo. "And we should stand for life in all its circumstances."

>> Frontrunners on the Terri Schiavo Case [all weasel out of supporting Terri]

Which tells us that as a political issue, supporting Terri is unpopular now. And this, in turn, tells us that the electorate is badly misinformed about the case. We must maintain and step up our efforts to get the truth out -- and get it out before the next elections.

I wonder if we could collect and edit Terri threads into a book. It would be the only book in print that offers a theory of how Terri ended up on the hall floor, almost dead, after Michael came home late one Saturday night in 1990.

Meanwhile, more power to the few politicians with the guts to stand up for Terri now that it is less popular!
