Suspect in Amtrack Train Evacuation Released
Denver (AP) The FBI has released a man suspected of causing the evacuation of an Amtrak passenger train passenger west of Denver Sunday night.
The train’s crew alerted authorities after the passenger made claims he had a weapon and bomb. The train with about 220 passengers was evacuated in Arvada.
Special Agent Rene Vonderhaar of the Denver FBI office says the man was let go Monday morning after several hours of questioning.
The FBI calls the incident a “complete misunderstanding.’’
Vonderhaar now says there never actually was a threat on the train.(snip)

PAKISTAN: ATTACK ON TROOPS ‘REPRISAL’ FOR DADULLAH DEATH
Karachi, 14 May (AKI) - (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - A major aerial espionage operation began Monday by US drones over the skies of the remote North and South Waziristan and the Kurram agency in Pakistan, after militants carried out a strike on a meeting of Pakistan, Afghanistan and NATO forces in Kurram agency. The officials were meeting Monday at Teri Mangal in Kurram agency to consider border fighting between the two neighbours which erupted on Sunday. After concluding their discussions, the NATO and Afghan forces returned to the Afghan side of the border and en route were attacked by militants loyal to al-Qaeda leader Abu Laith Al-Libby.
“It is an al-Qaeda led operation in retaliation of Mullah Dadullah’s death”, a North Waziristanbased caller, who claimed to represent al-Qaeda, told AdnKronos International (AKI) and added that the scheme was planned by Abu Laith Al-Libby.
Two Americans and few Pakistani soldiers were reported to have been injured, possibly killed in the incident. The Afghan government put the blame on Pakistani soldiers but a Pakistani military spokesperson denied the claim.

May 14, 2007 - As many as five or six U.S. air marshals are now assigned to each U.S.-bound flight from airports in Frankfurt, London and Manchester, England, because of fears terrorists might attempt a coordinated series of mid-air explosions, law enforcement officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.
“We’re afraid someone in the back is going to mix something or light something up, so air marshals are being placed strategically through the plane,” said one senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the stepped-up security.
The stepped-up security on flights out of Britain’s Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester airports began about two weeks ago, based on intelligence reports that another al Qaeda hijacking plot was in the making, the officials said.
ABC News reported last Friday that U.S. and German officials fear a new terror attack is in the advanced planning stages.

According to an islamic terrorist website, the new top Taliban military commander is Mullah Bakr (age 37) and he replaced his brother Mullah Dada Allah (age 40) who was killed by US troops in Afghanistan two days ago. According to this terrorist website, Mullah Bakr was released 2 months ago (March 2007) in exchange with an Italian journalist who was kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON, May 14, 2007 – The U.S. military, coalition partners and Iraqi security forces are making a “massive effort” to find three American soldiers missing in Iraq since May 12, a senior U.S. military officer said today.
“We are using every asset and resource available to the United States and our Iraqi allies in these efforts,” Army Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, spokesman for Multinational Force Iraq, said during a videotaped release broadcast on the Pentagon Channel today.
A convoy carrying seven U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi army interpreter was ambushed by enemy forces as it traveled west of Mahmudiyah, Iraq, during a search for roadside bombs, U.S. officials reported. The attack site is located about 20 miles south of Baghdad.
Positive identification has been made of three U.S. soldiers killed in the attack, Caldwell said, and of the Iraqi interpreter. Identification of the fourth U.S. soldier killed in the ambush is pending, he said.
However, “we still have three missing American soldiers,” Caldwell said, noting their current duty status is classified as “whereabouts unknown.”
“We are doing everything we can to locate our soldiers,” Caldwell emphasized, adding that Iraqi citizens are providing tips to help find the missing troops.
Caldwell said credible intelligence information indicates that the U.S. soldiers have been abducted by al Qaeda or an affiliated terrorist group operating in Iraq.
Intelligence teams, manned and unmanned aircraft, and an array of other U.S., coalition and Iraqi assets are being employed in the search operations, Caldwell noted.
Information now being disseminated about the missing soldiers is intentionally limited, Caldwell noted, so as not to jeopardize ongoing search operations. The missing soldiers’ families are receiving all available information, he said.
Caldwell said the U.S. military’s thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the missing soldiers and to those families who have suffered the death of a loved one as a result of the attack.
Thousands of U.S. troops are combing the area where the missing soldiers were last seen, Caldwell said, noting everyone involved is “doing everything we can to find these brave and courageous soldiers.”
The U.S. Army is pledged to honor its tradition of never abandoning a comrade on the battlefield, Caldwell pointed out.
“We live by that creed,” the two-star general said.

48 Detained, Weapons Caches Found in Iraq Operations

WASHINGTON, May 14, 2007 – Iraqi and coalition forces detained 48 suspected insurgents and discovered weapons caches in Iraq over the past three days, military officials reported.
Soldiers of the 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, today detained a suspected insurgent wanted in connection with a recent rocket attack on a coalition forces’ base near Baghdad. After receiving small-arms fire, troops moved to the suspect’s house and quickly secured the area. The suspect had an AK-47 assault rifle, two ammunition magazines and a cell phone.
In the Iraqi capital today, coalition forces detained a man for allegedly conspiring directly with al Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders. Inside the targeted building troops found a cache containing weapons and explosives, including bomb-making chemicals. An explosives disposal team safely destroyed the materials off-site.
Coalition forces detained four suspected terrorists in Ramadi today for having alleged ties to al Qaeda in Iraq leaders. This raid was part of ongoing operations targeting al Qaeda in Iraq’s command structure, officials said.
Troops nabbed three individuals in Hit today suspected of supplying foreign fighters and helping them move throughout the region. Coalition forces also detained three suspected terrorists today near Karmah for allegedly aiding foreign fighters.
“We continue to actively target al Qaeda and foreign fighter networks to reduce, and eventually eliminate, their ability to attack people and the institutions of Iraq,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.
In other news from Iraq, terrorists killed at least 25 civilians, four Iraqi police officers and wounded about 130 other people yesterday afternoon when a car bomb detonated in Mahkmur.
Iraqi army and coalition force soldiers immediately responded to the attack site, treating victims at the scene and transporting casualties to a local hospital and medical facilities in Mahkmur and Irbil. Most who were wounded suffered minor injuries and were released, officials said.
The explosion destroyed one building and trapped an unknown number of people under the rubble. Both Iraqi security forces and coalition forces are working to remove the rubble and aid living victims the find.
“This is another cowardly and heinous act perpetrated by the anti-Iraqi forces,” said Army Col. Stephen Twitty, commander of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “Their horrific actions are a blatant attempt to intimidate the population and drive a wedge between the people of Iraq.
“We will not let that happen,” he continued. “Both the Iraqi security forces and coalition forces are working hard to prevent that.”
No Iraqi army or coalition force soldiers were injured. The incident is under investigation.
Also yesterday, Iraqi army soldiers and U.S. Army paratroopers captured 25 suspected terrorists in an operation south of Diyarah. The raid was aimed at suspects who military officials say are responsible for emplacing improvised explosive devices and conducting mortar attacks.
Soldiers from 1st and 2nd Battalions, 4th Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army Division, and paratroopers from the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, carried out “Operation Mongoose” to capture individuals responsible for recent attacks against coalition forces and local residents, military officials said.
In addition to nabbing 25 suspects, combined forces also found three 120 mm mortar rounds and various IED-making materials. The suspected terrorists are being held by the Iraqi army for further questioning.
Combined Iraqi and coalition forces launched a major security operation yesterday morning in Basra city, detaining six suspects and discovering a weapons cache.
Led by the Iraqi army and supported by the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancasters, and assets from the Joint Helicopter Force, the operation targeted high-level insurgents in Basra city’s Hyyaniyah district. Combined troops arrested six suspects, and in the Hay Al Mudhara district, troops discovered a significant quantity of weapons and munitions, including components used in making explosively formed penetrator roadside bombs, explosives, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, and militia propaganda.
Following the operation, multinational force soldiers were attacked by an improvised explosive device, small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. A Warrior armored vehicle was immobilized in the attack, but all coalition members safely returned to the contingency operating base. One rogue militia member was shot during the extraction of multinational forces.
“This operation shows the increasing capability of the Iraqi security forces as they take on the rogue militia who are seeking to disrupt the establishment of a secure environment and endanger the lives of the people of Basra,” said Army Maj. David Gell, Multinational Division Southeast spokesman. “Once more, our soldiers have shown their selfless commitment in supporting the Iraqi forces as they disrupt the terrorist activities, and move ever closer to provincial Iraqi control in Basra.”
Paratroopers detained three suspected insurgents during a raid at the Hateen apartment complex in Iskandariyah May 12.
A local resident tipped off Company D, 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division paratroopers to the whereabouts of the men responsible for an explosively formed projectile attack that killed one soldier and wounded another. Paratroopers detained three suspected insurgents and are holding them for further questioning.
Iraqi special operations forces conducted an early morning operation May 12 south of Baghdad, capturing two suspects allegedly responsible for a bomb attack that killed a U.S. soldier earlier in the week. With coalition advisers present for support, Iraqi forces raided a residence in Baghdad’s Hillah area, capturing their primary targets without incident.
The suspects also responsible for killing innocent Iraqi civilians, and conducting explosively formed projectile attacks against coalition forces in central Iraq, officials said. No Iraqi or coalition forces were injured during this operation.

Dead Taliban Leader Was Training U.S. Recruits

Thirty-six hours before he was killed by U.S. forces, Taliban Commander Mullah Dadullah said he was training American and British citizens to carry out suicide missions in their home countries, according to a videotape interview to be broadcast on ABC News’ “World News” Monday.
“We will be executing attacks in Britain and the U.S. to demonstrate our sincerity,” he told an Afghan interviewer, “to destroy their cities as they have destroyed our cities.”
A senior U.S. official told the Blotter on ABCNews.com that recent intelligence reports confirmed Dadullah’s claim that U.S. citizens were being trained in Taliban and al Qaeda camps.
“The number is small, not large, but even once is dangerous,” the official said.
In the interview, Dadullah said, “This is our religious and moral duty to train suicide bombers against the nuclear power of the infidels, and they will be used when they are needed, whether they are one, 10 or 20.”
A day and a half after the interview, U.S. forces carried out a helicopter assault on Dadullah’s hiding place in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. Dadullah’s bullet-riddled body was put on display by Afghan officials to confirm he was dead.
U.S. military officials said Dadullah had been tracked from the Pakistani city of Quetta across the border into Afghanistan, where he granted his last interview.
“His ego probably got the better of him,” said ABC News counterterrorism consultant Alexis Debat. “The U.S. and Pakistan have done an excellent job of intercepting the couriers moving taped messages from al Qaeda and Taliban leaders. This is why we have not seen Osama bin Laden in some time,” Debat said.
