MONTEREY, Calif.- The Monterey County Herald has cut seven full-time jobs and one part-time position in various departments, reducing its workforce by about 5 percent. "The small reduction in workforce is aimed at trimming costs amid a downturn in the newspaper industry," said Gary Omernick, the newspaper's president and publisher. "Despite that trend, our readership continues to grow as we transition from a newspaper to a multimedia company."

The paper did not disclose the number of newsroom jobs affected.

The Herald, which was acquired by Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc. last year, is the latest newspaper to reduce staff as the industry seeks to reduce costs amid declining advertising and circulation.
