Jesse Jackson to target oil companies on diversity

U.S. activist Rev. Jesse Jackson on Tuesday said his organization will target top energy companies like Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips in a push to create more jobs for women and minorities in the industry.

Jackson said members of his Rainbow PUSH Coalition plan to buy stock in 20 of the world's largest energy companies. As investors, the group will seek change by attending annual meetings, calling for talks with the companies' chief executives and pressing for fairness hearings at the state level.

"We intend to inject ourselves into the struggle for fair access to energy," Jackson told a news conference. "Historically, we've not had that access."

Minorities have been underrepresented in all parts of the energy sector in the United States and are largely relegated to the role of consumer, Jackson said.

He did not offer statistics but described minority representation in the industry as "very low."

As part of its efforts, Rainbow PUSH will examine the racial make-up of a company's board of directors, its suppliers, its consultants, its contractors and its outside legal firms, Jackson said.

Representatives for Exxon and ConocoPhillips did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

On Monday, Jackson said he met with John Hofmeister, president of Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Shell Oil Co. U.S. unit, and described the meeting as very good.

If big oil was as evil and non-diverse as the Meddlesome Mr Jackson seeks to imply, wouldn’t he have spent the last thirty years showing off his cement boots to the fishes somewhere.

He must have squandered all the protection money he received from Texaco.

Remember to thank Jesse when the regular hits $4.00 per gallon at the pumps.

"Read: Jack$on found out that the oil companies’ profits are up, so he wants his piece of the action."

Exactly. The very same tactics used by Al Sharpton -- buying stock in media companies in order to combat racist lyrics in hip-hop. Jackson and Sharpton are in everything for the money. Nothing more, nothing less.

Remember this RE:JACKSON; OIL COMPANIES; DISCRIMINATION

Texaco, Shell Workers Fight Discrimination

Worthly of Note: Oil; Employment

"Global enrollment in geosciences and other university majors relevant to the oil industry is dropping at the same time that the demand to devise new fuels and refining processes is rising. In the U.S., enrollment in geosciences hit a peak of 35,000 students in 1982 but now meanders around the 5,000 level, according to Scott Tinker, director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas."

"It is now around 1965 levels," he said. While enrollment in these programs is rising in China and a few other nations, it's mostly below the level required in nations where oil is being produced." "The picture is even worse at the graduate level. In 1982, about 4,000 Ph.D.s and master's degrees were awarded in geosciences in the U.S., and nearly half the recipients went into the oil industry, said Raul Restucci, executive vice president of exploration and production in the Middle East at Shell. Now only about 400 to 600 advanced degrees are handed out, and only 20 percent of recipients go to work for oil companies."

"The industry is having a real tough time filling jobs," Restucci said. "People availability will be a key constraint for a supply side response to increasing demand. In Houston, half of the work force will retire in the next 10 to 12 years."

Did Jesse turn up some sinecure-less bastards?

Oil company jobs aren’t like gubmint jobs. You need to read and write to work for Exxon or Conoco, and high school drop outs need not apply.

My MIL gave her copy to me because she could finish it either; it made her too mad to realize the guy wasn’t in jail. I couldn’t finish it either for the same reason.

“He did this a few years ago. Must be running short on cash for his leftist, racist crusades”

Time for a new “SHAKEDOWN” to fill the coffers, and with oil companies making record profits(a fact not lost on Jackson) he will prevail.

I also highly recommend "Shakedown."

If anyone doesn''t know, "Reverend" Jackson got his start in Chicago shaking down white grocery store owners with his street gang thugs.
