Josephine County residents may be taking their safety into their own hands.
Sheriff Gil Gilbertson has been warning the public of potentially dangerous cuts to public safety, and it looks like his message is getting through.
The sheriff's office reported nearly 430 applications for concealed weapons permits since the first of the year. That number wasn't reached until mid-July last year.
Residents of Grants Pass are not surprised by the news.
Gun shop owner Bud Hopson says, "The people are asking the questions and the sheriff has come out and said that basically we won't have any means to respond to the people, he told them they're going to be defenseless."
Sheriff Gilbertson has even suggested self-defense courses for local residents.
Josephine county voters can offer some support by passing the public safety levy in May.
What’s new???? The only manpower that they ever seem to have is to hide behind overpasses and hand out speeding tickets(revenue) to people.
No matter how good the police are, they can only react to a crime, not stop it. Unless of course, they just happen to be at the right place at the right time. Not to self, Don’t rob a donut shop. :)

Oregonians realizing they need to protect themselves. Great idea. Hope it spreads.
