What Giuliani Has to Do
National Review on Line ^ | May 1, 2007 | Byron York

Anthony Carbonetti has heard the conventional wisdom a million times. Republican primary voters may say they like Rudy Giuliani now, that wisdom goes, but once they learn his positions on abortion, gay marriage, and guns, they’ll abandon the former New York mayor in a heartbeat. Carbonetti, Giuliani’s long-time right-hand man — he was the mayor’s chief of staff from 1999 to 2001 — doesn’t buy it.

”Why do you think they don’t know?” he asks, referring to those conservative voters for whom abortion, or marriage, or guns are overwhelmingly important issues. “I’m of the impression that people do know. If you’re a single-issue voter — guns, gays, abortion, the environment — don’t you know where every single candidate stands on your issue?”

IMHO Rudy's big problem is convincing enough conservatives that he will stand by and allow the party to continue its present positions on right to life and guns and that he'll do nothing to alter those positions if he's nominated and elected. If he doesn't do that convincing, he's not going to get the nomination. This doesn't mean he has to become born again, get a carry permit, and start packing; he just has to convince pubbie voters he won't jeopardize the right to life and the Second Amendment.

That’s asking alot, and even if he doesn’t do any of that, he could still get the nomination, and then......

There is no way for a conservative to meet Rudy half way.

He rates very liberal on all social issues, and the issues he is supposedly strong on, are either unproven or imaginary.

It would not be feasible to meet Rudy half way based on the facts.

I think you have stated reality very very well.

Clearly - an enormous number of GOP voters see Rudy’s assets as greater than his liabilities.

It’s called pragmatism.

There’s one other way he’s stepped in it on an issue that’s more important than right to life and guns put together, the “global warming” scam. Right now he agrees with it and seems to be a bit to the left of Gore. If he doesn’t get off that hook, it ought to sink him, especially versus Thompson, who doesn’t buy into the scam.

While I respect your opinion - you view is clearly in the minority - as every poll shows.

Strong conservatives - like yourself - need to work hard for other candidates and back off the Rudy attacks.

Imagine Rudy as POTUS - how will be see your like once in office?

Know what I mean.

Just say no to Rudy - and fight for a candidate of your choice.

If your candidate beats Rudy - I will support your candidate.

Now what kind of “Stop Rooty” ping list would it be if I backed off Rooty?

That would be akin to being on a “Stop Hillary” ping list and leaving her alone to talk about Barack Obama!

I respect your opinion too. I just do not like Rooty.

How about GO FRED, does that help?

Ok - you're now on my Christmas Card list.

I like it.

Now what kind of “Stop Rooty” ping list would it be if I backed off Rooty?

You are 100% correct indylindy.

I will look forward to reading your posts.

FYI - I like Fred a lot....This week he has a big speech out west somewhere (I forget where) and people has begun to attack him - that's a good sign for him.

"While I respect your opinion - you view is clearly in the minority - as every poll shows."

You are being very loose with your quote "every poll" because it just isn't true. Rudy may lead in most states, even nationally. But that doesn't mean squat until the delegates are chosen next year.

Statistics are showing strong evidence that there is an undercurrent of resistance to Rudy Giuliani, his numbers are dropping. As voters learn of his liberal positions, he is rejected by a larger group. And as the name Fred Thompson keeps coming into play, his numbers continue to climb.

You Rudybots keep referring to posts as "attacks" when they are negative toward Rudy. Actually, nearly all these posts are with information provided by Rudy himself. So perhaps you should complain of the "attacks" to Rudy Giuliani himself. He made his bed, now he must lie in it.

No, it is called stupidity. The "polls" are nothing but leftist media lies.

As soon as Thompson’s in there, Rudy is toast. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that whoever was mayor of NYC on 9/11 would have come out of it looking good, merely by going on the evening news and mouthing a bunch of “stay strong” platitudes.

I am looking forward to this time next year.

One of two outcomes.

I get to push out a lot “I told you so posts”.

or....

I get to align myself with someone other than Rudy for the GOP.

Either way - I win.

As soon as Thompson’s in there, Rudy is toast.

One observation on the "Toast" line.

A couple of weeks ago - FR was full of "Rudy is toast" posts when the media was full of his comments on abortion.

"Rudy is toast", "end of Rudy", "bye bye", and so on...

Two weeks later - no change in the polls...

He has staying power so far.

You might be right - only time will tell.

The Rudy campaign consists of outright lies and distortion.

How many ways does Rooty lie?
