Sir Mark Malloch Brown, who recently stepped down as deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, has been appointed vice-chairman of his friend George Soross hedge fund company.
Sir Mark will also serve as vice-chairman of the billionaire philanthropists Open Society Institute, which promotes democracy and human rights, particularly in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
In a letter to shareholders in his Quantum hedge funds, Mr Soros said Sir Mark would provide advice on a variety of issues to him and his two sons, who now run the company on a day-to-day basis. With his extensive international contacts, Malloch Brown will help create opportunities for [Soros Fund Management] and the fund around the world, it says.

From the FT, the seedy details:
Since stepping down from the UN in December, there has been speculation that Sir Mark might return to consulting. He has also been viewed as a possible candidate to take over as president of the World Bank if Paul Wolfowitz were forced out, although most observers expect the job to go to an American. Sir Mark was a vice-president of the World Bank for five years.
While at the UN, Sir Mark came under fire from the conservative press for his friendship with Mr Soros, a bitter critic of the Bush administration, who rents a house to Sir Mark next to his own in Westchester, New York. Sir Mark pays a market rent.
Last year, Sir Mark accused the administration of allowing too much UN-bashing, particularly by the conservative media. John Bolton, the then US ambassador to the UN, demanded an apology and said: Maybe its fashionable to look down on middle America and those who have not had the benefit of a continental education. But as a UN official what he said is illegitimate.
Sir Mark, who is British, also came under fire for being too pro-American in spearheading the efforts by former secretary-general Kofi Annan to reform the UN. Sir Mark is currently finishing a book on globalisation.
If Soros could bankrupt any county on the planet it would the US-of-A.
Sorry Soros, America is to strong and you don't have Trillions.
Sucks to only have a few billion..

“Sir Mark, who is British, also came under fire for being too pro-American in spearheading the efforts by former secretary-general Kofi Annan to reform the UN.”
My head just exploded.
My my, the plot thickens. And all the oily, cheesy bottom-feeding communists are joining their head commie, Soros.
God help us if ANY Democrat wins the 2008 election!
Brown is the anti-American scumbad at the UN. It figures he would a Soros-favoritea nd probabvly was on the Soros payroll long before taking this position.
Follow the money.
Get a rope.
