Tenet has apparently fabricated a September 12, 2001, meeting with Richard Perle at which Tenet insists Perle said Iraq had to be made to pay for 9/11. (Tenet: “[Perle] said to me, ‘Iraq has to pay a price for what happened yesterday, they bear responsibility.’ It’s September the 12th. I’ve got the manifest with me that tell [sic] me al Qaeda did this. Nothing in my head that says there is any Iraqi involvement in this in any way shape or form and I remember thinking to myself, as I’m about to go brief the president, ‘What the hell is he talking about?’” (Emphasis added).

Leaving aside that Perle denies Tenet’s account, the meeting Tenet vividly recounts could not have happened. Perle was not in the United States on September 12; he was stranded outside the country, unable to return due to the closure of U.S. airspace.

Hmmmmm....

Thanks for the ping, jdm:

There’s a lot of food for thought, here. I’m going to pick up Tenet’s book tomorrow.

I’m still annoyed with the fact that we won in Iraq — when Bush announced Mission Accomplished. And then we stayed!!!???

None of these fired clerks would be writing books had we left after we won.

That's not the way it works. We have a responsibility to construct a viable government. The mistake was in not establishing security. We left the Baathists unemployed and out of power. We should have either included them in the government and military, or hunted them down and killed them.

Jeff, you are absolutely right. Nevermind what I said. It's a frustrating week, politically speaking.

Tenet, as noted above, claims to remember a meeting with Richard Perle that apparently never happened; but also he claims not to remember a single meeting

LOL.

It's a frustrating week, politically speaking.

It has been a very frustrating 4 years. The Democrats strategized and focus grouped their path to power. Create a false reality: Bush lied and WMD was the only reason we went to war. You could see them start their propaganda campaign, but the Bush Whitehouse did nothing to counter it. Now it's one onslaught after another. The ultimate goal is the defeat and humiliation of the American military.

Jeff -- that may be the result, but it's not the goal.

The goal is POWER.

Here's the report that Tenet's CIA gave to Congress; it led to the war vote. I got it from a Congressman in Colorado (Schaffer) It's a 5.5 meg PDF file.

WMD was the only reason we went to war.

Well, the administration helped that along too. They thought that was the biggest selling point, so they did hype that quite a bit.

If you want to say we shouldn’t have gone to Iraq, and should have anticipated the present chaos there, fair enough. But at least have the honesty to say you’d prefer the alternative: A Saddam Hussein, emboldened from having faced down the United States and its sanctions, loaded with money, arming with WMDs, and coddling jihadists.

This bears repeating.

wai-ming — you know, sometimes I wish Saddam could take over and kill all these insurgents that are killing our troops.

Ack. This has been a frustrating weekend. I'm going to say goodnight before I say anything else I regret.

But I though I'd leave you all with a photo of George Tenet -- since his "retirement."

I did not and will not watch any of the Tenent parade.

But .. I understand he made a big deal about the outing Plame. But there was no mention that the person doing the outing was Armitage - Powell’s protege!

This would have been the perfect time to put that farce to bed once and for all.

I still say .. Hillary’s people got to Tenent and his main goal is to protect THE CLINTONS.
