Actually, I would say the steel was deformed into losing its ability to carry the weight of the freeway not melted like a steel smelter. However, the pictures tell the story of how an intensive gas fire can collapse a steel supported structure like a freeway bridge...or a skyscraper! The traffic in this area is some of the worst in the state. It will be very bad come Monday.

A section of highway lies burned and crumbled in
Emeryville, Calif., after a tanker carrying gasoline
exploded on Sunday, April 29, 2007. In the resulting
blaze, a section of freeway that funnels traffic onto
the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsed.
Thetruck's driver walked away from the scene and called
a taxi, which took him to a nearby hospital with
second-degree burns.

Same thing happened just north of the Bronx some years back, where the interestate comes down into the Major Deegan expressway. A tanker crashed and burned avoiding some idiot that cut him off. It took almost a year before the overpass was restored.

not to mention, the lightweight bar joists at the WTC were a LOT flimsier than a highway bridge girder built to handle San Francisco earthquakes

Is there a pattern to these accidents?

The phenomenon is an enginering usage of the word creep.
Creep..... A slow flow of metal when under high temperature or great pressure. Yahoo dictionary.

I was thinking that jet fuel had a higher heat of combustion than gasoline....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency
has regular gas at 125K BTU/gal,
aviation gas at 120.2K BTU/gal,
jet fuel slightly more, 127.5K-135K BTU/gal.

That must have been one hot fire. Rush hour will suck around there for a while.
