Will food ever be safe? (pet food recall expanded)

What's a pet owner to do? You check the recall list and the product you feed your pet isn't there.

So you keep using the same pet food.

But then, as it has several times already, including late this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announces an expansion of the recall list. With almost 5, 600 products listed, you search again. And your brand has been added.

We had been using Natural Balance but the recall has expanded for their products. A lady in the article says two of her dogs, on a Natural Balance food that hasn't been recalled, have died. Just thought I'd pass on the info. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Such a sad situation. And it will get worse when it expands to people food, as it already has to the hogs. So is it safe to eat pork or not? We're hardly in a position to start raising all our own food. And if we were, the feed you buy for the animals could be contaminated.

I read a couple articles last week about vitamins. Seems many come from China...in fact the article stated that most Vitamin C comes from China.

Somehow, dogs and cats survived for millions of years without overpriced supermarket pet food in that bright-colored hard-to-open-without-spilling-all-over-the-floor packaging.

Back in my day, they didn't have all these Petco and Pet Smart "superstores" with the aisles and aisles of pet toys and fancy collars (that look right out of an S&M catalog) and oversized pet pillows that would the Queen of Sheba envious. Why those pet stores are setup with the idea that if you don't walk about of there with at least $100 of their useless, overpriced merchandise, then you are shortchanging your pet in some way - you cheapskate!

When I was a boy, my cat caught mice and my dog chased cats. We fed them whatever was left over for dinner and they liked it. I taught my dog to catch a frisbee out door and make do with the "people" toys we have lying around. As for the cat, we let it fend for itself and it lived something like 12 years and had a seemingly happy life. Dog got hit by a car when it was about 7 (that's 54 in people years or something like that) and it's frisbee catching days were over but it hobbled along happily for another 4 or 5 years after that and continued to be otherwise healthy with a shiny coat and a good disposition. We might have given it a can of Alpo now and then but pretty much it survived on people food and what it was able to pull out of other people's garbage cans.

There's a new market niche waiting to be exploited.
Guarantee that all the ingredients in your product are grown, processed and manufactured here in the U.S.
At this point, many folks would gladly pay more to have some reassurance of the safety of their pet food, vitamins and other products.

On the Natural Balance website...it lists that they were not aware that the contaminated products were being added to their dog foods, i.e. those products were not in their “formula” nor listed in their ingredients. Seems to me that that must be breaking some law.

When we were growing up, our dog ate table scraps. I don’t think my folks every bought a can of dog food.

I would have never guessed that there were 5,600 different pet foods sold in the U.S.; from my spot checking, it appears that most of the ones listed at the FDA here were made by Menu Foods. That's incredible -- I wonder how they kept up with all of the labeling alone.

Pretty scary, isn't it? They could wreak havoc on this country very easily, it looks like.

When “dog food” was first introduced to be sold in supermarket, it was pretty much made up with what we would refer to as “table scraps” with some quality by-products of meat. In fact, dog food was so much like people food that low-income people would eat it in a pinch and not get sick. Over the years, as competition increased, dog food makers looked for ways to make their product cheaper and we’ve been on a downhill slope ever since.

Hanging is too good for these monsters who contaminated the pet food.

Find the exec’s who allowed this to happen, put a few cuts in them to start them bleeding, then throw them in a hog pen with a bunch of hungry hogs. Fish out the remaining human skulls from the hog pen and put them on sticks outside the corporate offices of these pet food companies as warnings.

That might help the healing process for thousands if not millions of pet owners.

Just a quick thought about pet food other than those for dogs and cats.
I supplement my turtle’s diet with Purina Aquamax 600.
I went to their website, and so far, so good.
Folks may want to check out the food they give to their other animals as well.

It’s not only vitamins. Rx drugs come from China and India. This is how Walmart could afford their $4 ‘script program.

I’ve been feeding my dogs a mixture of rice, hamburger, and peas ‘n’ carrots since this thing started, when I saw that the list of contaminated suppliers kept growing. I don’t think Kibble’s N Bits was on the list, but I’m not taking chances. Of course, the dogs are just delighted...in fact, I suspect my two dogs are down on their little doggie knees every night, praying,”And thank you, O Giant Sky-Dog, for making the Chinese screw up so badly that our human has to make and serve us people food every single day....Oh, and please comfort our fallen furry brethren by gathering them unto Thy bosom. Amen.” I wonder if we will ever know the entire truth of this horrific incident-and whether it will stop with pet food?

“Your post doesn’t demonstrate a very bright mind at work.”

And you know about bright minds - how nice.
