A Third Way? (Sam Waterston of Law & Order wants 3rd party ticket)
Newsweek/MSNBC ^ | April 27, 2007 | Eleanor Clift

Fred Thompson isn't the only 'Law and Order' character eyeing the 2008 presidential campaign. Inside Sam Waterston’s efforts to help promote a third-party ticket.

The actor Sam Waterston, who plays the hard-hitting assistant D.A. in “Law and Order,” has a confession to make. “I’m a moderate,” he declared in a speech at the National Press Club. “You’re looking at a bird rarely seen in Washington, even in springtime.” Waterston was in town to promote Unity ’08, an Internet scheme to launch a third-party ticket, made up of a Republican and a Democrat, to run together against the two major party nominees.

Waterston is much more animated in person than is his character on the show; he smiles a lot and defers to the political pros seated with him who founded Unity ’08. He calls himself a skeptic but comes across more like an idealist. Tall and angular, he’s played Lincoln so much that he’s easy to typecast as a president. Asked if he might run, he said no, but thinks his costar Fred Thompson will get into the race. Waterston just wants to do his part to shake up the system. “I know I’m just a bug running around in the sun who doesn’t know he’s about to be squashed,” he said at one point. “To me, this is a liberating thing to say what I think.”

Only in Hollywood is coming out of the closet as a moderate considered bold. Waterston actually lives in Connecticut, but concedes his Hollywood friends are having a hard time getting their heads around the notion of a third-party candidacy. “Part of it is fear,” he says. “Ralph Nader fear.” Democrats don’t want another election stolen from them by an allegedly well-meaning idealist wanting to reform the system.

Get your stories straight, people: I thought the Bushies and the Supreme Court "stole" the election from Al Gore! Now it's Ralph Nader? Make up your mind!!

What a load of poop. The reality is that they don't think a Clinton can win the White House in a two way race. The previous Clinton couldn't.

Unfortunately, a third party candidate just takes away from the party he/she is most closely aligned with — in the case of Perot, it took away 15-19 percent of Republicans, and gave the election to Clinton, who won with 43 or less percent.

I’m sure he realizes HE gave the election to Clinton.

If McCain peels off as an independent, it will be toast for the Republican candidate.

Never could figure out the hair part thing. On Law and Order, his hair is parted on the left, in his TV commercials for a certain brokerage house; his hair is parted on the right! Is he left or right?

Great idea! Assuming Hillary runs, I think Obama should run on a third party ticket. Of course, we need to balance him with a Republican, I'd suggest Lincoln Chaffee, or Olympia Snowe, or Arlen Specter, or even Michael Bloomberg.

Interesting.

I found this outfit has ties to the lobby/law firm “Steptoe & Johnson”

Ever heard of them?

From imdb.com:

Waterston voices the TV ad for left wing magazine "The Nation," including the line "The Nation gives you that liberal media slant you can't get anywhere else."

The last five words of that proves he's as clueless as a box of rocks. Or lying.

Would someone tell me what a moderate is?

It's someone who wants their hands held by the establishment. They believe in MSM-fabricated issues such as "big money" in politics, "the rich," and "this country is on the wrong track" baloney.

It's all designed to move those goalposts further and further to the left, that's all this is, nothing more. Just talk about "hot button" issues and gloss over the real issues, complete with polls. This Unity 08 is a pure crock of crap and conservatives shouldn't take it seriously.

Third parties never work anyway. If they have a great message, one of the other two parties will say “we’ll do that too” and adopts the popular message and that’s the end of the third party.

I may be wrong(it's happened before) but I don't think McCain will do that. He had his chance to run as Kerry's V.P. and turned it down. He knows he wouldn't have a chance of winning on a third party ticket and I really doubt that he's interested in being a spoiler.

Perot wanted the attention and he sure got it, giving us 8 years of the Clintons.
