There was no real reason to think the tack would work. In fact, Thompson's own campaign manager dismissed it as "gimmicky and hokey." Ah, but perhaps it worked because it was exactly who he was, and people sensed it immediately.
And there's no reason a good ol' cowboy who achieves the status of a lawyer and an actor cannot continue to be what he always was: a good ol' cowboy.
