> The Stalinist idea that some kind of “official rating system,” for any art form, is in any sense morally acceptable, is, well, simply disgusting.

Would bringing back the Hays code make you happier?

"...Hays code make you happier?"

Of course not. The Hays code was garbage too. All these mechanisms, whether coming from studios, government, or local agitation, are just forms of council communism.

For more on council communism, see the various writings of people like Michael Albert at Z magazine or his books. He's a radical leftard. The idea is that all purchases of any kind by an individual would have to be approved by a "neighborhood council."

Anything that gets between the content producers and the consumer is evil, IMHO, regardless of which group of busybodies is putting it in place. In the case of movies, I want to see what the writer's and director's vision was, without a bunch of talentless hacks jiggling their elbows and requring them to recut the movie to get it into chain-owned theaters or whatever. Mobs of busybodies who have nothing better to do than try to force their will on the choices offered by local theaters need to find something more productive to do with their time on earth. Ditto for TV rating schemes, ditto for music rating schemes, etc. They're all just manifestations of council communism, the triumph of the collective over the individual.

It's the same as the philosophy behind gun control. Freedom-loving people want to be able to buy exactly what creative and inventive people like John Moses Browning and Eugene Stoner have created, as they envisioned it, not some crappy revised version that a bunch of no-talent hacks has reduced it to.

There's another connection between gun control and movie ratings and the restrictions on what local theaters can play. The more disingenuous apologists for movie ratings will bring up some cliche about porn or "kiddie porn." But ratings systems have never done anything to stop porn. It's the same as libs yammering that more gun control will reduce crime. Producers of kiddie porn have no more regard for either the Hays code or the present rating scheme than criminals have for gun control laws. They're equally idiotic, IMHO. I've never understood the appeal of council communism, other than to leftards, but it has been infiltrated into our society in many ways in the past century.

So I'm not surprised to see Valenti in the background of the picture of LBJ being sworn in, the president who signed into law the Gun Control Act of 1968, arguably one of the most liberal and most morally defective presidents ever. Birds or a feather flock together.
