The Democrat Party has a long history of treason during war. The party broke apart in 1860 during the secession crisis.

Some Democrats in the north were more conciliatory toward the South than Republicans. They called themselves "Peace Democrats'. Their opponents called them Copperheads because they wore copper pennies as identifying badges.

As today, they were for the war when things were going well and against it when things went badly.

The Copperhead leader, Clement Valladigham persuaded the party to brand the war a failure. The plot failed
