My Way Man Accused of Dental Work in Garage
Apr 25, 9:53 PM (ET)
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A man was held Wednesday on charges that he performed dental work on customers without a license in his "filthy" garage, authorities said. Roger Bean, 60, was arrested Tuesday and held on $6,000 bond.
Bean performed denture fittings and made false teeth in his garage, charging just $200 for a full set of dentures, a procedure that typically costs more than $2,000, authorities said. But he was not licensed to practice in Florida.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's detective Don Zumpano said there were "health risks with operating this type of facility outside of your house," adding that Bean's workspace was "filthy."
Neighbors and clients, however, praised Bean for saving them thousands of dollars.
Ron St. Mary, 73, head of the neighborhood crime watch, said Bean is no criminal.
"He's helping the old people who don't have a few dollars," he said. "I think the world of him."
It was not immediately clear if Bean had an attorney.

Hey, if he could also learn to cut hair and make meat pies, he might have a great franchise. Johnny Depp could make a movie about it.

I'm guessing your dentist didn't need to run Home Depot mid project.

I would have less of a problem with this guy’s vice grips than I would that $25.00 Black & Decker drill.

No doubt turned in by other dentists

Would love to learn who turned him in
a disgruntled patient, perhaps?

The guy’s name is Mr. Bean? I don’t care if he had 500 liecenses, I wouldn’t go to a dentist named Mr. Bean.

Some researchers have developed a process for making temporary bones using ink jet technology and dental cement.
I can see home kits being sold for making your own dentures. Scan in old dental records, "airbrush" the cavities, etc., a USB bite sensor to get the mouth readings, and you're good to go.

Oh, and by the way, the $1,500 was an extremely discounted rate based on a pay by cash group I belong to.

There's nothing inherently wrong with doing this out of your home...he just didn't get permission from the state. And oh yeah, it was a little bit dirty.
My grandfather was a neighborhood cardiologist in Brooklyn about 40 years ago - his office was in a converted garage. Worked fine for his patients.

The guy was probably a denturist. These are the folks that actually make the false teeth for the dentist’s of the world.
In some states, denturist can practice independent of dentists. They charge a LOT less... They don’t pull teeth or do other dental work. They just make impressions and make false teeth.

Reminds me of the guy in the Bronx who was a pretent gynecologist and was using a storage facility for his “medical office.” True story. He got caught 2 years ago. It happened in some immigrant area and since he was one of them, they trusted him. Don’t remember who turned him in.

That’s probably why he couldn’t get a license. His name is Bean.
