NEW YORK — Skybus Airlines Inc., a new U.S. budget carrier, on Tuesday said it will start flying on May 22 with $10 one-way tickets available on all flights.

"Beginning today, passengers can buy airline tickets for less than the cost of a tank of gas," Skybus CEO Bill Diffenderffer said in a statement.

The launch of the new low-cost carrier, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, could pressure established carriers like AMR Corp's (AMR) American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc..

Skybus, which plans to acquire more than 70 aircraft over the next five years, hopes to be able to undercut rivals by selling advertising space inside and outside its planes and charging for priority seating and checking bags.

It keeps costs down by only taking reservations over the Internet and not staffing a call center.

With taxes and fees the true cost of the ticket will run around $30-40 round-trip.

Oh, they're far more creative than that. Taxes and fees add another $10 to your flight from any of their service airports to Cincinnati, OH. Oh, you mean you want to go back? Your ticked for the return flight is $100, plus tax and fees. So your round trip ticket to Cincinnati is $110, plus tax and fees.

Didn't bother going much further to read about the extras I could buy.

Um.

No.

I refuse to fly on an airline that costs less than the cab fare to the airport.

A $10,000 flight insurance policy, however, will be $900.

Guess you haven’t joined the Spirit Air $9 fare club.

(Sometimes they have fares as low as 1 cent.)

LOL

and if pigeons are just flying rats then I say jetliners are nothing more than flying buses. Reminds me that a live aboard in the Marina told me once that living in a boat is nothing more than living in a trailer on water.

Pilots?

They hold a lottery and a lucky passenger gets a Playstation joystick.

I remeber flying the old People’s Express to college where they went up and down the aisle collecting your cash or credit cards to pay for the flight.

A lot of the $10 fares are already taken.

There are none to Ft. Lauderdale, for instance.

But, from KC to Columbus and vice versa, there are a lot.

I’d like to know what kind of REGULAR car you get a tank of gas for at $10. I haven’t paid $10 for a full tank of gas since 1999. I would also like to know how they can maintain a plane on that kind of fee.

They are actually flying A-319’s.

Not too bad. Great planes.

You are correct about the $30-$40. I recently booked a ticket on Spirit Airlines from Myrtle Beach to Boston. The cost round trip is $38.80 - $18.00 for the ticket and $20.80 in taxes. Spirit has a $9 club and on the specials you have to fly on certain days and on certain flights. It makes it cheap for me to go up to CT to see my son and daughter-in-law. Got a deal on a rental car so the whole trip is only $110....can't beat that!

Captains get 65k/year and First Officers get 30k. Horrible pay to be away from home for 3 weeks a month. Also, the Flight Attendants make $9/hr and sell crap on the plane for a 10% commission. I'll never fly on this airline.

“$10 Airline ticket? Sign me up! “

Uhm I would not be so fast to react, did you happen too check out where they fly. When going to Seattle you have to go to some obscure airport 77 miles north of Seattle DUH. Hell it would take you longer and cost more to drive given the distance if you wanted to visit Tacoma or Southern Seattle. Have not checked out the other airports but my guess is the gates are filled so you will flying out of tiny airports who have gates open.
