Panel Grants Immunity to Gonzales Aide

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- A House committee voted Wednesday to grant immunity to Monica Goodling, a key aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during the firings of eight U.S. attorneys. She had refused to testify, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

The 32-6 vote by the House Judiciary Committee surpassed the two-thirds majority required to grant a witness immunity from prosecution. A separate vote to authorize a subpoena for Goodling passed by voice vote.

The House panel's action was part of a rapid-fire schedule Democrats have set to compel Bush administration officials, among them Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, to testify about issues ranging from President Bush's now-discredited claim that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa to the dismissals of eight federal prosecutors.

As the House Judiciary Committee voted on Goodling's immunity, its counterpart in the Senate approved — but did not issue — a subpoena to Karl Rove's deputy, White House Political Director Sara Taylor, as part of its probe into the prosecutor firings.

Democrats say they want to force into the open the story of why the eight U.S. attorneys were fired and whether they were singled out to influence corruption cases. Republicans point out that Gonzales survived a brutal Senate hearing last week with President Bush's support and no evidence of wrongdoing in the prosecutors firings.

They still can’t “compell” her to not say “I DON’T RECALL”.

This was all very predictable. They will keep going after anybody that has ever spoke to or communicated with Rove for anything and everything. Wonder who has the job of going through his garbage?

Which is what I would answer to every question just to piss them off big time. “What is your name? I don’t recall”.

This is what those same idiots tried with Oliver North. One of the biggest mistakes a prosecuting attorney can make is granting immunity to someone without first knowing what they are going to say. Ollie rode rings around the Prosecution (I remember People magazine trying to turn the lead prosecuting weasel into some sort of sex symbol, obviously without success).

The GOP DID know what Webb Hubbell was going to say about Bill Clinton, but then he totally reneged on the immunity deal.

Meanwhile the media didn’t blink or see a double standard when Hillary announced that she would “clean house” in the government if she becomes President.

She’d fire Bush appointees for partisan reasons.

Then again, she is QUEEN.

ranging from President Bush's now-discredited claim that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa

What the HELL do they mean "now-discredited"!! This is total BS. The twisted word game has now disintegrated into a bald faced lie.

It has not been proved that Saddam PURCHASED uranium from Niger. It is factual that he tried to purchase uranium from Africa!

I wouldn't get agita about this. It's only the AP. Certainly, it does get difficult at times separating the lies from the incompetence, but look who they have writing for them: Laurie Kellman is most likely a recent, mediocre college grad who mostly parties with her friends and tries on new shoes at the mall, etc. I doubt she's deliberately being malicious. She's just a party girl who doesn't know any better.

Nope.
She cannot take the fifth because it’s only self-incrimination that applies and she’s been alleviated of that.

The “I fear for my life” defense won’t work either because she is too high-profile and they can protect her.

They can also pull the immunity at any time if she fails to properly cooperate

I didn't say take the fifth, I said "I DON'T RECALL", two totally different animals.

As I said in my posy they can also pull the immunity at any time if she fails to properly cooperate. The “I DON’T RECALL” defence will be grounds for this.
