Paul Wolfowitz's conduct at the World Bank is outrageous and he deserves to be fired—although, let's face it, any woman who would sleep with him does deserve a raise—but let's not be romantic about his Bank opponents. To hear it from them, once Wolfie is out the door, the Bank will get back to its core mission. If by core mission they mean rewarding corrupt, Third World elites and making the poor poorer, I think they'd be correct.
There are few organizations that have done more harm to the people of the planet than the World Bank. During the 1960s and 1970s, it played a huge role in creating the global debt crisis that decimated the Third World by approving huge loans that shored up tinpot dictators like Mobuto Sese Seko in Zaire and the generals that ruled most of Latin America. The loans were unpayable, so the countries inevitably had to take out fresh loans to pay off old ones, leading to a never-ending spiral of debt. Beyond that, World Bank funds were frequently used to pay for white elephant projects—like dams that never generated a kilowatt of electricity and highways that destroyed rain forests—and much of the money found its way into the pockets of crooked government officials and the balance sheets of First World banks.

I’ve seen it. But I don’t agree with your interpretation. You’re doing the same thing you did with the Libby case, overoptimistically calling it for one side when in fact it may well go to the other side. When I read your stuff on that, I thought Libby had it in the bag. Man, was I surprised when he didn’t. I think you are overoptimistic in this case, too, I think Wolfie is in really bad shape. All of this puffing and posturing from Europe and elsewhere can’t be good for Wolfie, no matter how stupid it is. WashPost is calling him ‘dead man walking’ and although I agree with you that the Euromeddling is disgusting, it isn’t going to help his prospects, either. I don’t know what is going to happen. But none of this stuff amounts to a gotcha for Wolfie’s enemies. If anything, they seem to be expanding and growing bolder. Are you aware that news is brewing about some of the emails being fake? I don’t know if they are, but that’s where the enemies are going on this, along with several other directions. It’s not good news for Wolfowitz to have this kind of ferment from enemies.

I think everything I wrote about the Libby case was true—I can’t account for the jury. I do think the appointment was unconstitutional and extra statutory and the “crime” charged preposterous on the facts.
I don’t say it’s an easy road Wolfowitz has to ride, but if I were he I’d not let my reputation be besmirched and then run w/o a fight. Neither would you.I don’t see the Directors having the guts to muster more than a no-confidence vote and if so, so what?

Quite right about Chavez, it’s something I’ve learned from. I think it will happen, but I am not sure it will be soon anymore. The thing about Libby is that what you were seeing was not how juries were seeing things. But I am with you that the whole thing was an outrage. It’s just that the badguys seemed to have succeeded where none of thought that they could have.
Given the low moral grade of his enemies, I can see why Wolf wants to defend himself. But he’s acting like an employee with a workman’s comp claim instead of a leader, vowing to cling to his job at any cost. The WB staff enemies know there will be a purge of them for political reasons if he’s out, they couldn’t bring themselves to see that he wanted to be their friend and appease them, they were just too leftwing. That means they’ll fight like rats to keep him from staying and if he does, will make it as miserable as possible. I think he ought to go just because they suck so much. But he wants to defend his honor. Problem is, he really shouldn’t have done what he did. I am not sure what he will do now, it’s such a lose-lose situation that I don’t see any good outcome.

As for the directors, I agree - they haven’t acted at all, and they claim they were gonna act ‘expeditiously.’ Yeah, sure. Ten years for now, that’s about their speed.
But I think there is some reason they are not acting. My guess is, they’re got far more skeletons in their own closets. Their records absolutely stink.

I am in a nasty fight with them on one of their bulletin boards and they are spewing the craziest, nastiest most arrogant supercilious antiamerican stuff you ever heard. Their hatred for the US is palpable. They are hanging themselves with this, revealing their true selves, the quotes alone from WB staffers are enough to make every American rise up against them when word of it gets out. Dollars to donuts, they get defunded, no US politician is going to send them funds after this kind of talk gets out.
I hope all this does backfire on the staff and those at the Bank who kept mum when they knew the truth..I see no way for this to prove a winner for them.

today the Telegraph is reporting the problem according to a senior bank source is that the security detail for Wolfowitz is too expensive. LOL

They are full of (expletive). Wolf deserves that security, given what’s out there, I think it’s legitimate, it’s a small cost, and I’d defend that. I was just thinking about how scurrilous that charge was.
