Opening Remarks to the N.A.R.A.L. "Champions of Choice" Lunch

The Yale Club, Thursday, April 5th, 2001

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much for inviting me to say a few words of welcome. This event shows that people of different political parties and different political thinking can unite in support of choice. In doing so, we are upholding a distinguished tradition that began in our city starting with the work of Margaret Sanger and the movement for reproductive freedom that began in the early decades of the 20th century.

As a Republican who supports a woman's right to choose, it is particularly an honor to be here. And I would like to explain, just for one moment, why I believe being in favor of choice is consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. In fact, it might be more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. Because the Republican Party stands for the idea that you have to restore more freedom of choice, more opportunity, more opportunity for people to make their own choices rather than the government dictating those choices. Republicans stand for lower taxation because we believe that people can make better choices with their money than the government will make for them, and that ultimately frees the economy and produces more political freedom. We believe that, yes, government is important, but that the private sector is actually more important in solving our problems.

So it is consistent with that philosophy to believe that in the most personal and difficult choices that a woman has to make with regard to a pregnancy, those choices should be made based on that person's conscience and that person's way of thinking and feeling. The government shouldn't dictate that choice by making it a crime or making it illegal.

I think that's actually a much more consistent position. Many Republicans support that position, but you don't hear that as often. For example, in a recent poll by American Viewpoint, 65 percent of Republicans supported changing the plank in the Republican platform that calls for a constitutional ban on abortion. That's 6.5 out of every 10 Republicans. And over 80 percent of Republicans believe that the decision with regard to an abortion should be made by a woman, her doctor, and her family rather than dictated by the government.

[Applause]

In any case, I just wanted you to know that many of my fellow Republicans stand with you on this issue. So I thank you, I thank NARAL for taking the lead in establishing freedom of choice for all of us, and as the Mayor of New York City, I thank you for being here in New York City.

A Rudy candidacy will mark the end of the modern conservative movement and the repudiation of everything we’ve worked decades for.

Only if he is elected.

Rudy intends to ignore the right throughout his run for the oval office. You will see no olive branches from him. His vision is a Rockefeller Republican party with conservatives banished to the hinterlands.

Quoting Giuliani: ...those choices should be made based on that person's conscience and that person's way of thinking and feeling.

Sure, Mr. G, it has nothing to do with God and life and the natural order. It only has to do with "thinking and feeling." //sarcasm now off
This quote alone kills his candidacy for me, and I don't care who he is running against. Then comes the 2nd Amendment, court appointments, homosexual "rights," etc., etc.

There is one problem. If Rudy were to run as second man on the Republican ticket, he could actually help swing votes to our side. A lot of them. I'm not saying that's what should happen, but it's something I've wondered about. I would possibly consider him on say, a Thompson/Giuliani ticket if it ensured a Republican in the WH. Hillary/Obama scare me a lot more than Giuliani (although Giuliani as a vote decider in the Senate makes me nervous). I would prefer Thompson/Hunter, but Hunter is still pretty unknown and he wouldn't bring any crossover votes. Not sure about Romney. There's something I can't quite put my finger on that I don't like and never have about him. Maybe my gut is wrong on that. Just trying to think practically. It's still early. And who knows? Perhaps some younger right-of-center hottie (Obama-style)will suddenly appear out of the woodwork to grab the women and children (voters). ;)

The luncheon was paid for by NARAL. Maybe they provided them.

" Pro-life voters, believe me I know, will stay home before they vote for someone like this."

And that is exactly why they are pushing him. The license-at-any-cost gang doesn't care about political parties, only destroying decency and morality.

I am beginning to not see very much difference between Rudy and any of the Democrats.

Any videos of Fred Thompson speaking to the NARAL crowd? Raising money for them? Praising Margret Sanger?

Any videos of any other person with this kind of outrageous nerve?! Praising Margeret Sanger, no one but an evil person would say these things.

None of the others have done this.

He was a good sheriff for NYC. But that’s about it.

Sheriffs are supposed to enforce the law and protect the citizens who are going about in a free society.

Rudy does not believe in a free society except when it comes to him and his friends immoral, and perverted lifestyle.

The Real Rudy Giuliani:

From Human Events:

Rudy's Strong Pro-Abortion Stance

As these comments from a 1989 conversation with Phil Donahue show, Rudy Giuliani is staunchly in favor of abortion:

"I've said that I'll uphold a woman's right of choice, that I will fund abortion so that a poor woman is not deprived of a right that others can exercise, and that I would oppose going back to a day in which abortions were illegal.

I do that in spite of my own personal reservations. I have a daughter now; if a close relative or a daughter were pregnant, I would give my personal advice, my religious and moral views ...

Donahue: Which would be to continue the pregnancy.

Giuliani: Which would be that I would help her with taking care of the baby. But if the ultimate choice of the woman - my daughter or any other woman - would be that in this particular circumstance [if she had] to have an abortion, I'd support that. I'd give my daughter the money for it."

Worse yet, Giuliani even supports partial birth abortion:

"I'm pro-choice. I'm pro-gay rights,Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. "No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing," he responded." -- CNN.com, "Inside Politics" Dec 2, 1999

It's bad enough that Rudy is so adamantly pro-abortion, but consider what that could mean when it comes time to select Supreme Court Justices. Does the description of Giuliani that you've just read make you think he's going to select an originalist like Clarence Thomas, who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade -- or does it make you think he would prefer justices like Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy who'd leave Roe v. Wade in place?

Rudy's abortion stance is bad news for conservatives who are pro-life or who are concerned about getting originalist judges on the Supreme Court.

I know all about this man’s past abortion cheerleading. It is one of MANY reasons he will not win the GOP nomination.

“Republican Big-Wigs Support Pro-Abortion Event in NY
Pro-abortion Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also supports unrestricted abortion, are co-chairs of the 2000 Choice Award Presentation to be held on May 30 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City.

The event is sponsored by the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that is campaigning for the removal of the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.”

But that’s about it.

I think he would have been a better senator for New York than Hillary.

Why would people vote for Hillary-lite when they can have the real thing, the witch herself? Rudy isn’t giving us a reason to support him.

This guy doesn’t have a conservative bone in his body. Why the support? Is it because the power brokers think that he is liberal enough to be elected by the undecideds? The republican party has cut it’s own legs out from underneath it by pandering to the middle and the left. The country has shown time and again that we want true conservatives. What don’t they get?
