>> Well now you're becoming disingenuous. Thompson will be 66 years old in 2008. You think he's going to be someone's VP? I see it as the other way around, Thomson will serve one term to provide a bridge for Hunter so he can take over <<

TOMMY Thompson will be 67 in 2008, and a bunch of freepers keep whining "but WHY wasn't Tommy willing to be a freshman Senator in the minority party? WHY doesn't try for the V.P. slot? WHY didn't he stay int he cabinet?" as if the guy to spend another decade waiting around for a higher federal office.

>> he opposes the federal government criminalizing abortion. Again, a federalist answer. <<

Sounds like the answer Harriet Miers gave in a speech that killed her chances of being on the SCOTUS. Also sounds like Stephen Douglas' failed ideas on slavery (hey, I don't like it one bit, but I'm gonna wash my hands of it and let the states decide)

I'm not talking about science. I'm talking about common law.

OK, demonstrated that common law, as understood at the time of the nation's founding, held that life began when the baby started moving enough that it could be felt (although how you reconcile this with your previous talk of trimesters remains a mystery). And your link is appreciated. But even this view was out of a lack of knowledge; the *principle* involved was that life is always protected from violence. The *factual* determination of when life begins was dead wrong; it is very clear that life begins at fertilization. And I *still* have no idea what all this has to do with anything Fred Thompson said.

All your posts here have been a pathetic effort to drag Fred Thompson down to the level of Rudy and McCain.

Just trying to take out the trash is all. You’re a troll, plain and simple. Trolls aren’t interested in ‘differing viewpoints’ and neither are you. You are interested in spreading lies, halftruths, and talking points about Fred Thompson in order to elevate whatever other candidate you are supporting.

It is my understanding that this kind of behavior is no longer tolerated on this website and people, myself included, are reporting your behavior, so it can be dealt with as they see fit.

I believe that a Federalist point of view is compatible with his voting record. The FEDERAL courts got the federal government into what should have always been a state issue. Because of that, his votes were important for the pro-life cause which he is part of. Because of the courts inserting the feds into the issue, then the deal was done and he has done all he can to protect the unborn.

That being said, he also believes that the issue should go back to a state issue. But that doesn’t mean that the most horrendous parts of all shouldn’t be a federal issue (like partial birth abortion), which is very real and visible murder.

Should abortion be illegal - I personally believe so, and I honestly believe Fred feels the same way.

The difference is - I believe Fred’s word because he has been consistent. Rudy has been anything but... claiming he would appoint conservative judges, yet he is a Planned parenthood donor who has in many ways promoted and encouraged the abortion industry.

Rudy is a politician’s politician - playing whatever side of an issue he thinks will get the most votes. But HIS record speaks just as clearly as Thompson’s, and it isn’t pretty.

There were few laws on abortion in the United States at the time of independence, except the common law adopted from England, which held abortion to be legally acceptable if occurring before quickening. James Wilson, a framer of the U.S. Constitution, explained as follows:

With consistency, beautiful and undeviating, human life, from its commencement to its close, is protected by the common law. In the contemplation of law, life begins when the infant is first able to stir in the womb. By the law, life is protected not only from immediate destruction, but from every degree of actual violence, and, in some cases, from every degree of danger.

I DO NOT agree with “life begins when the infant is first able to stir in the womb”. BUT, this is the basis of “abortion is legal and Constitutional”.

We, now, KNOW better. It should be amended.
