Airmen from the 129th Rescue Wing load a HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopter onto a Russian Volga-Dnepr AN-124 long-range heavy transport aircraft April 20 at Moffett Federal Airfield, Calif. The contracted AN-124 transported 129th Rescue Wing deployment cargo to Afghanistan because the high operations tempos of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have kept C-17 Globemaster III and C-5 Galaxy aircraft fully engaged. I, and my civil servant co-worker, saw one of these on the ramp at Ft. Hood's Gray Army Airfield, which shares the runway with the Killeen municipal airport. We were coming in from Orlando via Dallas, and right after touchdown, there it was. I said "what is that" he though it was a C-17, but I knew it was way too big for that (it was night with the ramp lights providing the illumination and we could only see the shape, not the color). Parts of the bird look like C-5, but the tail configuration is more like that of a 747.

It was still there the next morning when I came in to work. I haven't a clue what they were hauling for the Army, and wouldn't say if I knew.
