BYU Students Get Donations for Alternative Commencement [Without VP Cheney]
KSL News ^ | 4/24/07

BYU students wanting an alternative commencement speaker to Vice President Dick Cheney could get their wish, thanks in part to a local filmmaker.

The Deseret Morning News reports shortly after director Steven Greenstreet posted video footage online from a protest April 4 at BYU, the donations came pouring in.

By Monday afternoon, students, faculty and alumni received more than $12,000.

The money should be able to fund an alternative commencement at Utah Valley State College.

Meanwhile the uproar has drawn national attention because it's seen as a sign the Bush administration's support is waning. Cheney will speak at BYU's commencement on Thursday.

As if two years of polling 30% approval ratings wasn't sign enough.

Utterly narcissitic and undignified, but then again I am sure that these “children” were not brought up to know the difference between right and wrong.
They should be ashamed as should their parents.
Stupid is as stupid does.

The larger issue here is that BYU is normally quite a bit more authoritarian than most universities. They traditionally tolerate very little rebellion. I wonder how they will handle this? It seems slightly analogous to the Tienanmen Square situation in 1989, when students sought to go a bit outside the box. We know how Beijing reacted; and, off the record, it was let slip that “it is better to be hated than disrespected”.
Might there be some expulsions of key ringleaders? I would predict that. This is just too public and too direct a challenge to the university (and to the church).

If they don’t want a particular speaker, I think paying for another is a good way to change a speaker. Why should the school pick another one and pay for it.

What is going to happen to these spoiled idiots when they enter the real world and find out that they will not always get their way????? I’m truly afraid to find out.

True. I am just excited because now when Michael Moore is guest speaker the one’s who don’t want to hear him will have another option. This is a win-win for all.

The number of students that will actually attend the alternate graduation ceremony will most likely turn out to be quite insignificant. (Although it will receive more media coverage by the MSM than the school’s planned event.)

This is a tiny, tiny handful of students at a university that is overwhelmingly supportive of the President and the Vice-President. The fact that these malcontents are getting this kind of publicity is a crime.

So, the BYU students are going to go to another college to recieve their diploma? Oh, you mean they will go to another college just to hear a different speaker, and then go back to BYU to pick up their diploma. Big deal.

My thought, “four years and they haven’t learned a damn thing. What a shame”. Money poorly spent, but maybe someday they’ll come around, however I doubt it. Once struck with the stupid stick...

BYU Grad.

This will kill any high level comencement speakers and will cheat any future students due to these smelly hippies.

This is as stupid as the race based seperate graduations of the race based student government bodies. Seperate but equal.

Has the school made a statement for these few wackos?

How would they like it if students at other colleges boycotted when BYU came to their campus for a football game because they are Mormons?

The MSM and thise hippies are one and the same. The MSM would rather talk to their own than those (ugh!) conservatives.

$12,000 is chump change. I thought the moonbats were serious about this.

Shouldn’t this money be used for something important like “Save the TP”?
