U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blasted President Bush's perception of reality concerning the war in Iraq, saying he is in "a state of denial."
The Republican president said in a speech Friday in Michigan that U.S. troops are making headway against insurgent forces and Monday in Washington vowed he would "strongly reject" legislation containing a timetable for withdrawing American troops.
"The White House transcript says the president made those remarks in the state of Michigan," Reid said. "I believe he made them in the state of denial."
The Senate's top Democrat said there should be a regional summit to find a solution to the conflict, and that Iraq needs "tangible, measurable and achievable benchmarks," CNN reported.
Bush reiterated his stance that a withdrawal deadline would be a "mistake."
"An artificial timetable of withdrawal would say to an enemy, 'just wait them out,'" Bush said at a White House appearance with Gen. David Petraeus, commanding general in Iraq. "It would say to the Iraqis, 'don't do hard things necessary to achieve our objectives.'"
The House proposes withdrawing troops by the end of August 2008. The Senate set a target of next March. Republicans say they could sustain a veto.
Actually, I tried to find the other cartoon that had dingy harry tying a white flag above the American flag as soldiers were trying to raise it.
Hey Gonzales, if you are going to go down, take these pieces of garbage with you.
I believe it was Thomas Sowell who correctly observed that some people are so busy being clever that they don't have time to be intelligent.
This from the party who refuse to hear updates on Iraq from Gen Petraeus? Rings a little hollow to me.
Reid is convinced from the polling that the War will win more Democrat Senate seats for him in 2008. So his is a simple strategy for a simple mind: “Put all your eggs in one basket and hammer on it.”
Since the war is not going away, Reid can identify himself totally to this one idea and not worry about sounding intelligent on complex domestic issues. For those, he has another simple strategy: “If Bush is for it, Reid will be against it.”
This will continue to polarize the country. Reid, the leader of the world’s greatest consensus-building body doesn’t mind misusing his office though. He’s seen the polls and wants a bigger Senate majority. That’s all he cares about.
But what if Americans are considering Democrats for the leadership of this nation? What if Pelosi and Reid are looking like real lightweights in the world of foreign affairs? What if the war is unpopular but cut-and-run doesn’t sound right to the majority who are quite patriotic?
I wonder if Reid, and maybe Pelosi, are so personally drunk with power that they would prefer to keep their leadership positions even if they kill the ‘Rats chance for the White House next year.
He's right! They will pick up more seats, because like it or not, he is willing to stand for something. That is a charateristic that Republicans cannot and will not do! They have become an emasculated party of wimps and pussys! Reid will pick up more seats, because Republicans will stay home in droves!
I hope people are aware that Harry Reid takes a phone call from the “Daily Kos” - every morning. You can bet the garbage Reid is spewing is from Kos.
How’s that for listening to the “kook” fringe of your party to deside foreign policy - when it’s not even your job to determine foreign policy ..??
What ever happened to his real estate thing that was being ‘looked into’?
you found it!
