Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. has agreed to purchase as many as 24 of Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliners, according to people close to the matter, as part of a larger strategy to keep the airline competitive on Atlantic routes while addressing concerns about greenhouse-gas emissions.
The deal would be worth as much as $3.6 billion at list prices, though customers typically negotiate discounts on large purchases. The orders, expected to be announced in Chicago this morning, were previously booked on Boeing's Web site, but it didn't identify the buyer.

So i guess they are getting into the ethanol business? I wonder what that will do to their range?
Probably more like biodiesel since JP-4 is essentially kerosene.

This MAJOR turn in SOP by Virgin Airways defintely means that LAST RITES are being administered to the A340-600 4-engine quad.
I might be mistaken...but I thought I read last week they were essentially giving them away now at 1/2 price. There goes any thoughts about future “profits”.
If nearly half of their market offerings (A340-500/600, A380) are not very competitive enough to bring a profit with a purchase, then those models will eventually become a financial liability.
