"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds," Thomas said.

Thanks for pinging me to this touching article, Deb. Remember on yesterday's Dose where I commented on the saddness in GWB's eyes? He took us through 9/11, the tough decisions on the war, and so on. He fought for reelection, and then, less than a year later, Katrina hit. On the heels of Katrina, the "summer soldiers and sunshine patriots" among conservative pundits and forums like FR all turned on him about Harriet Miers. They didn't just turn on him; many of them were vicious.

I think Katrina followed by the Miers dustup took something out of him that he has never quite been able to get back. Burnout happens to the best of us given enough stress and pressure.

This priceless and wonderfully generous gesture by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas tells me others see it too. The emotional wounds and scars this President has endured are indeed as hard to carry as physical wounds. I'm so grateful to the Thomas' for doing something to comfort the President -- for doing something I would do in a heartbeat if I could.
