Arn't taxes most of the reason for the disparity in CA prices, vs. most of the rest of the country?

Taxes are 8 percent, plus 8 percent plus a set amount per gallon that adds up to about $0.56 per gallon.

What makes California gas so expensive though is that the state requires a special blend not used in any other Western state (or perhaps anywhere) and much of the gasoline is piped in.

So mostly it is a supply problem in the old supply and demand scenario.

And the state loves the higher prices because they get more tax revenue (8 percent of a higher number is good to them).

RBOB gasoline $2.17 up 3 cents today. It hit 2.20 about a week ago and might well go above that on this push. You have to buy 40,000 gallons to get that bargain price, and even then it is base stock and has to be blended.

Traffic was very heavy yesterday and started about 7 AM, which is unusual for a Sunday. However, the lightbulb giveaway was probably the cause as everybody in town drove the 40 mile roundtrip in their V-10 pickups each burning three gallons of gasoline worth $9 to get their free lightbulb.

See my #36. It’s up to $0.586 per gallon. So it’s taxes, special forumlations, and lack of local refining capacity, for the main causes.

What would happen if true market prices were in effect? Is not 50 to 70 percent of our current military spending securing our oil supply and safe and secure transportation of oil?

Just curious, I’m not proposing we pay for our military by putting the true cost on a gallon of gasoline.

Gasoline is desperately in need of competition. A monopoly can charge whatever it wants. We should have learned our lesson in the 70s. If we don’t learn it this time, $4 per gallon will seem cheap.

The engines mounted over the front tire on a bike wore the tire down rather quickly.

I always wondered about that. The motors that I recall seeing had a hard rubber drive wheel that contacted the tire, not unlike the self-propelled lawnmowers of that period.

If memory serves, Sears sold the motors under their brand name, but the actual manufacturer was called "Aquabug" or something like that. I think the bike motor was derived from a tiny (like 1 hp) outboard motor, possibly of Japanese design. I saw a "Bike Bug" on eBay not long ago.

Exactly. More fear tactics. Whatever. If it gets high, I’m going to have to buy it regardless. I might not go out as much but, hey, I subscribe to Netflix so no worries....

RBOB gasoline $2.42
This might be interesting: pump price cannot go below this unless the dealer wants to plain give it away.
