Thanks for posting that, freema.
FR forced me to excerpt from the Guardian. You’ve shown me how to get around that, by posting the rest in a comment. Thanks. I wanted to post the Murtha stuff, too.
Thanks for the alert...I just sent you fr mail.
Thank you for the info. As much as I’d like to see the President veto the bill, if he can itemize his veto in the interest of time, I would expect that it’s what he would do.
Thanks to both of you for the posts. These dems are snakes!
Let me tell you what THIS troop wants...
No more PC war. Lift the ridiculous ROE that makes us little more than pop-up targets in tiny FOB's behind the wire.
No more repeats of Operation Phantom Fury, where we informed the insurgents, "We have you surrounded, but we'll allow you 24 hours to pack your tents goats and women and leave". Pick a known insurgent nest and pave it. No warning, no questions asked.
Mosques are targets. They are safehouses, sniper OP's, and cell caches. They are not religious sites and are not worthy of anything but a Hellfire at the base of the minaret.

I hesitate to jump into this election campaign because I actually know John Murtha and have respected, and appreciated his support of the military over the years. However, there are now three reasons that I have personal knowledge of, that cause me to question his judgment, his ethics, and his fitness.
The first goes back some fifteen years. Mr. Murtha was the Ranking Democratic Member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, the subcommittee that funds everything in the military. Mr. Murtha used his position of considerable power to force the Marine Corps to establish a Marine Reserve detachment of AH-1W Cobra gunships at the airport located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, which is his home town. The Marine Corps was actively opposed to placing a detachment there, and the only apparent reason for doing so was that Mr. Murtha had a son-in-law living in Johnstown who just happened to be a Marine Reservist and a Cobra pilot. So, in fact, he established a reserve detachment at considerable cost to the taxpayer solely for the purpose of giving his son in law a place to drill.
The second was his announcement that the war in Iraq is "unwinable" and that we should immediately withdraw. I don't know how others feel about such a pronouncement, but at a time when there are troops in the field, going in harm's way, I personnaly find such a statement to be all but treasonous.
The third was his most recent pronouncement that Marines were "guilty" of serious war crimes even while there was an on going investigation. In case Mr. Murtha has failed to read the Constitution, he should be advised that Americans are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He has taken it upon himself to convict them in the court of public opinion without the benefit of a hearing. He has at least twice taken an oath "to support, defend, and protect the Constitution of the United States.." and yet he tramples upon the constitutional rights of these Marines for what certainly appears to be nothing more than his own political gain.
And, by the way, if I were defense counsel to any of these Haditha Marines, if and when they are actually charged with a violation of the UCMJ, I would certainly consider raising undue command influence in the case. How can the accused, if there is an accused at some point, get a fair proceeding with the Commandant of the Marine Corps providing senior members of Congress with information that they then use to trumpet the Marine's guilt before the media. How badly does THAT abuse thier right to a fair trial?
I've known far too many great Marine officers and noncommissioned officers who have literaly given up their lives to protect their Marines, so I cannot accept Murtha's conduct. He has placed personal gain and personal agrandizement above all else, and by doing so, he has lost the respect of Marines everywhere.

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., who chairs the House panel that oversees military funding, said he wants a bill that would fund the war for just two or three months.
and the pork. Defeatocrats don’t have the votes.
``We dont want to throw in the towel, said Moran, D-Va. ``The problem is (Bush) is willing to play chicken with funding the troops and we arent. We just arent going to take a chance (the Pentagon) will run out of funding for the troops.
Perhaps it might get more support, since it does not require any benchmarks. It might be harder for Bush to veto.
Murtha made a lot of enemies. That makes him an ineffective congressman. This is clearly the end of his career.

Thank you. I’ve bookmarked that.
I didn’t think I posted the entire rest of the article, and I just double checked, I didn’t.
I should have responded to Sleeping Beauty and explained that I wasn’t posting the entire rest of the article and that I wasn’t trying to get around the rules. That’s actually why I didn’t respond. I guess I owe Sleeping Beauty an apology, for not setting the record straight right then. SleepingBeauty, I’m sorry.
If, reading this, you find I am still in the wrong (as in the length of the excerpt, etc.), please advise. Thanks.
