In the real world, it takes about a week for someone who has disgraced himself like radio talk-show host Don Imus to lose his job. In Washington, World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz and Attorney-General Alberto Gonzales hang on to their jobs for what seems like forever. Mr Wolfowitz was caught dissembling about how his girlfriend, World Bank employee Shaha Riza, got a raise that was double the size allowed and a guarantee of glowing reviews when she moved from the bank to the State Department to avoid cronyism charges. His legal team was unwilling to bend the rules, so he took it upon himself to dictate the terms.
Petty corruption is never good but is particularly bad for Mr Wolfowitz, who has made ending corruption in foreign countries his signature mission.
Of course, nailing Mr Wolfowitz for that is a little like getting Al Capone for tax evasion. Yet it's better than letting the architect of the war in Iraq and peddler of all its false pretences get off scot-free and with a plum job to boot. After all, the Medal of Freedom was awarded to others incriminated in the Iraq debacle.

This is not breaking news. It is a badly written editorial.
I think it's just a syndicated column pickup. Margaret Carlson is just an old Bolshevik from TIME.
It is by Margaret Carlson.
What would one expect?
Is this the same Ms Carlson that got dropped from Tim ?
True. But they still pick out the ones they like. Their picking of her column is consistent with the editorials of other rivals, like the New Straits Times, the Malaysian Star, the Nation of Bangkok and the Japan Times. I am sure I can probably find some others.
Why do the Asians hate wolfowitz? I know they do, they told me all about it when I lived in asia in the 1990s. I think they hate him not just because of his overbearing and meddlesome history there, but because he’s taken all the bank’s money and poured it down the Arab ratholes of west asia and the dump that is Africa. He never seems to read the news from any other places, it’s always just arab crap and Bono Africa, which if you were an East Asian, would be kind of disgusting given the failures of those hellholes. That’s just my theory for now, I am open to other ideas if you have any.
What makes you think it is breaking news?
well it’s so bad Beaver Jaws Margaret Carlson has to write for Bangkok News.
This nappy headed ho (she honest to God really is)in 2000 said the soldiers in Pensacola should NOT have their votes counted because they only joined to avoid paying taxes. She also said soldiers don’t do their fair share.
Wolfwitz was only emulating Jesse Jackson. When did Jesse quit, go to jail or at least have his tax exempt status yanked??
How much of these allegations is smear and how much is true? I think the other countries want their own people in his position and that people don’t like his Iraq War work with Pres. Bush. I’m open to hearing what people think; just curious and I don’t know myself.
according to the WSJ it is total smear, launched by the bureaucrats at World Bank who don’t like that Wolfowitz is trying to clean up their shop. that is putting their cushy jobs in jeopardy.
Maxine Watters is a better person that this beaver jawed
blistex
Margaret Carlson? LOL, I didn’t even know that old socialist Democrat scumbag was still around.
Liberal smear job.
Read about it here: The Wolfowitz Files The anatomy of a World Bank smear
Margaret Carlson if I rememeber in the 2000 election debates while pending its proper outcome while imbibing Chardonnay and Chatting with IMus on His show the Morning after said The US Troops who voted out of Florida were Tax evaders and their votes shouldn’t count or something of that naturebecause they weren’t living there they just registered as a resident so the wouldn’t have to pay state Income Tax..she was a regular on CNN capital Gang
I remember that. She said that service members shouldn’t be allowed to vote because they were tax evaders. I was suprised she wasn’t fired and run out of the country.
Actually, Wolfowitz didnt dissemble. He was up front about his girlfriend, and asked to recuse himself from decisions regarding her. The World Bank ethics board did not permit that. Because he was open about his preexisting relationship with her, she got a new job, and was compensated for having to leave to prevent a conflict of interest.
He has been blameless in this matter. Of course the usual corrupt bureaucrat resents him, because his charter is to clean up the corruption.
Chipmunk? No, wharf rat.
