Japan wants the fighters US refused to sell Canberra

Peter Alford
Tokyo correspondent
April 23, 2007

THE Japanese Government wants Washington to overturn an export ban on the F-22A Raptor so the most advanced stealth fighter aircraft in service can be considered for Tokyo's next-generation military aircraft procurement. The US refused to consider selling the F-22 to Australia, its other closest Pacific ally, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to raise the matter when he meets George W.Bush in the White House on Friday.

Japan's Defence Minister, Fumio Kyuma, will ask his opposite number, Robert Gates, for access to F-22 performance data, transfer of which is also forbidden by US law, when they meet next weekend.

Possibly China does have it’s hands in the pockets of the Washington crowd. I say we give Japan and Taiwan the planes with some nukes as part of the package. Might shut up both mainland China and N. Korea.

Sometimes, I think the Japanese and the Aussies would do a hell of alot better job keeping our secrets than we do.

Re #3

I am sure they are included. Still there are many "money-is-good" Republicans, who do not want anything between them and money.

I love us. This technology is already a couple of decade years old for the United States... what do we have that is completely classified?

If we aren’t going to to sell it to the Aussies, why would we sell it to the Japanese? If we sell it to the Japanese, the South Koreans might go nuts!

No. As I said with the Israelis and the Australians: I’m happy to export the F-35 when it’s ready, but the Raptor should stay at home.

Re #10

Things are getting complicated. N. Korea's antics and America's "hug China" approach, combined together are creating many unsettling problems. It won't be a nice neighborhood.

I like Craig's idea. Sell them to the Taiwanese...and I would say sell them to the South Koreans rather than the Japanese. That'll make China and NK squirm!

If we can give South Korea the most advanced stuff we got, maybe we can pull out of there even more quickly.

Love the Aussies and the Japanese, but no... We got a whole bunch of F-14s, F-117s, FA-18s, F-16s, and F-15s that will be hitting the market the next few years, real cheap like, have a gander at ‘em.

Considering that the Israelis sold Patriot Missile technology to the Chinese in the '80s, I don't think we should send them sophisticated weapon system ever again.
