"Hokie" Media Coverage Popularizes Mass Murder
War of Wits ^ | April 22, 2007 | Jayme Evans

On the March 16th morning broadcast of Fox News Live, within hours of the conclusion of the massacre, Fox contributor and former D.C. Homicide Detective Rod Wheeler was asked about the possibility that an M-16 may have been this shooter's weapon of choice. It is unclear -and may never be known- whether a witness reported an M-16, whether a witness assumed that an M-16 was involved due to the volume of fire, or exactly where Fox obtained this information.

If you'll remember the Beltway sniper incident which turned out to be the work of John Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, initial speculation in the media was that a military-trained sniper was likely involved. Similarly, the immediate focus of the media speculators once again fell on a member of our armed forces in Blacksburg. Mr. Wheeler wondered aloud on camera what the shooter's affiliation to the military might have been, as M-16s were not exactly easy to come by.

A former homicide detective ought to know better than to stir this pot...

Fox interviewed numerous witnesses throughout the day. But rather then asking them the questions necessary to obtain the facts, such as "where were you when the shooting started?", or "what did you see?", they were asked things like "How are you feeling?", or "What's going through your head right now?"

Later that evening on the O'Reilly factor, Bill O'Reilly had a couple of students on to help fill in some of the blanks. Unfortunately for O'Reilly, he learned after a few brief questions to one of the students that the "witness" had no first hand knowledge of the shootings. He heard it from another student, who probably heard from another, and so on.

When they talk about Cho’s ramblings in his creative writing class, I thought he sounded like an aspiring Quentin Tarantino.

On CBS, I caught a reference to a man carrying an M-16. I'm guessing (that's what it is!) that someone saw an early responder lugging an M-16 and mistook him for the gunman.

The media are covering themselves in ignominy in this affair, and the university administration might as well start cleaning out their offices. That delay in broadcasting the news of a shooting in the dormitory -- with the gunman still running around loose -- was fatal to 30 people in that lecture hall.

The campus security people assumed that because the gunman had left the dormitory, he was now off-campus and unlikely to return. Heads will roll for that one.

They seem to have so much more sympathy for a killer...

agreed. From the signals missed about his "disease" to the fact he was running loose for so long, there is plenty of blame to go around. Heads should roll.

I was wondering...have there been any reports as to why
the crazy guy stopped? Did he meet any resistence whatsoever? Were the police closing in on him?
Did he run out of victims?Did he just get tired?
Did someone, anyone, do ANYTHING to stop him?
or was it like a fire left to burn itself out?

How did they get March 16th out of April 16th. The same way they said Ebay sells ammo when they don’t?

Despite the ethnicity of Malvo, Ferguson, and Cho, the MSM will continue to profile violent mass killers as white males who drive pickups and belong to the NRA. As always, they’ll never let the truth interfere with their stereotypes.

I’ve not heard anything about why he stopped. As far as I know he met no resistance other than students trying to barricade the classroom doors. Perhaps he just figured the party was over when he ran out of bullets.

Oh, yeah, I meant to ask someone about that. Did the Ebay/ammo lead turn out to be false? I know it was all over the news...

Yup. If this has been a white male, he would have been condemned in the media immediately, as some privileged ingrate who had a wonderful life, and somehow threw it all away.

But when someone of a different culture or ethnicity does the same thing, it is bullying, racist taunts, or simply too much pressure trying to assimilate in the armpit of the Great Satan.

He was off campus though - he was mailing his manifesto to NBC.

When have we EVER seen someone go back like this? I can’t remember a time. The police were not wrong in thinking he was gone - he was.

The guy bought two magazines, not ammo. It was all smoke and mirrors trying to portray how easy it is to get guns and ammo in the states. What they don’t think about is you can buy all the ammo you want through mail order outlets. This really has nothing to do with the crime. The real crime was leaving 26,000 students unarmed and at the mercy of one ARMED man.

Point conceded. I Can't ever recall of someone coming BACK for more. That just shows the degree of planning that went into this deed.

Of course its false . The only ammo Ebay sells is inert stuff. He bought the mags, but of course the media has NO idea that they were empty .

My wife does the e-bay thing, not me, so I wouldn't know.

Funny how the media immediately turns its focus to the many supposed "loopholes" they say exist in gun laws by pointing out meaningless info such as this, but they ignore the fact that this guy should -by all accounts- have been in a straightjacket. What about the loopholes in the laws governing the confinement of "mental defectives" such as Hui that result in the massacre of over 30 people?

We hear about this over and over. Some guy goes berserk, and inevitably a family member or relative says "gee, I thought he was acting kinda funny, but he hasn't been taking his medication lately..."

Just heard he was a “ good Ebayer “ on Fox news, because of his positive responses from buyer-sellers . That means millions of people who use Ebay like me have something in common with the cold blooded killer .
