Don Imus producer Bernard McGuirk also fired over Rutgers remarks

NEW YORK -- The longtime producer for Don Imus' syndicated radio show joined his boss on the unemployment line one week after the disgraced broadcaster was booted from the airwaves for racist and sexist comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

Bernard McGuirk, who joined the "Imus in the Morning Show" as producer in 1987, was let go late Thursday by WFAN-AM for his role in the ugly incident, CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Friday. CBS Inc., the parent company for WFAN, pulled Imus off the air on April 12.

McGuirk was one of Imus' frequent on-air foils, and was involved in the now-infamous "nappy headed hos" exchange that left both without jobs. He provided much of the program's dicier content, a great deal of it while doing over-the-top impressions of the late Cardinal John O'Connor and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

Imus, in an oft-repeated schtick, would deride McGuirk as a "bald-headed stooge" when the material veered into dangerous territory. McGuirk also handled the booking of Imus' guests, a group which ran the gamut from presidential candidates to mainstream media pundits. ....."

I figured McGuirk would be fired. From the way the whole incident went down it would not be as bad if McGuirk hadn't started the Ho comment. Of course Imus was always on the edge and was bound to crash eventually.

I figured McGuirk would be fired.

I figured he would be too. I'm sure McGuirk wasn't surprised either.

What I think made it worse was Imus fanned the flames and went along with it, instead of slapping McGuirk down with his usual trademark retorts and laughing about it afterwards going into a commercial break.

Too bad! His Cardinal Egan(SP?) bits were funny. I hate to see anybody fall to the race hustling machine.

It would have bee a better move, but in this PC climate Imus
imploding was inevitable. He really should see if he can get a Satellite Radio deal.

Bernie was my favorite of the “gang”. He’s alot like me in real life, when it comes to jocular humor, always trying to push the envelope.

I hope he gets a satellite deal, and I hope that if he does land a spot on either Sirius or XM (I’m thinking he’ll opt for XM) that McGuirk is his producer.

I got an Imus In The Morning from the early 1990’s on VHS, recorded live on C-SPAN, and in that particular show, he’s chomping on his Nicorette gum on camera, and chomps down on his tongue while listening to a funny Rob Bartlett bit playing on the air, and yells a string of expletives that the C-SPAN mic’s pick up, and grabs his lower jaw, and then when he comes back to the radio, he apologizes to the 3 people watching on C-SPAN. LOL

CBS was waiting for social pressure to make Imus and McGuirk resign (in a move to rehabilitate their images) so they wouldn’t have to pay their salaries...they had to fire Imus when advertisers started bailing...perhaps CBS waited to see if McGuirk would quit to follow Imus to wherever Imus will wind up (if anywhere). Now CBS is stuck with both of their salaries...unless they want to sue (not likely!).

First time I heard Imus was when I went to broadcast school in 1989. The school’s radio station got it’s news from NBC Radio, which also syndicated Imus’ morning show.

I miss the old Bolshevik Geezer and his crew. It was the only
thing MSNBC had that was good part of the time.

Imus’ toadies make Howard Stern’s look restained. How many times can someone listen to that craggy old fart Imus say “Shut up, you jerk” while his pals laugh uproariously? Most boring radio show ever.

Here's something that Imus would play leading into a commercial. It's Casey Kasem recording a series of spots for radio stations for American Top 40. I've got a 5.5 minute audio file of him goofing up quite a number of times, but this is just a sample.

I bet Wor 710 in NY signs Imus.
They have no ratings in the mourning.
They signed Michael Savage after WABC let him go in 2004.
Savage is getting big ratings for Wor.

That’s about when I started listening...back when Lori McNichol did the Nynex Mobile Fan Highway Patrol.

The four of them (don’t forget Louie!) are a great team and I can’t imagine the show with one missing.

They almost made me want to go into broadcasting, if I had any talent for that kinda thing.

Yeah, Lou Rufino is great too. I hope wherever Imus resurfaces, the rest of the guys resurface there.

Dunno about Charles though, I heard he was still doing news in the morning at WFAN.

If he did sign with them, how do you believe his political impact will change? I can’t imagine any of his fruity lib regular guests having the balls to go back on his show after all this.

Who’s on 770 in the morning? I dont even know, cause 660 WAS a preset in the car.
