Indeed!
New England used to be as solidly Republican as the South was Democratic. Remember when Maine and Vermont were the most Republican states in the Union?
Another supreme irony of American political history is that the blue-blooded coastal elites used to be rock-ribbed conservative Republicans while socialism flourished in the Bible-Belt populst Heartland (Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Montana, etc.). What happened? The only thing I can think of is that two "mirror image" universes (as in the classic Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror") collided and got all mixed up--our Rockefellers were switched with liberals while the followers of our William Jennings Bryan were switched with anti-income tax laissez faire capitalists!
That is good!
Tick Check is a regular evening event here :~) The kids are big enough to do their own heads but I still announce it.
After the Civil War the word "Republican" was the same as "Evil" in the South. Actually they were called "Radical Republicans" and they came into the South and punished the Southern States. They set up military governors, forced the South to ratify the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and then enforced them. For about 100 years the South was the Democratic Party until it "LEFT" them in the late 60's & 70's and then it was the Republican party that was associated with Conservatism.
Sorry...I'm a history major and sometimes I get carried away when I'm posting.
Plus there was always a radical element to the Democratic party from the days of Jefferson (when it sympathized with the Jacobins) to Jackson (with its "levelling" philosophy and such radical factions as the Loco-Focos) to the days of William Jennings Bryan--the Biblical Fundamentalist who was an economic Leftist back when such a thing was possible and who (as admitted by FDR) founded the modern Democratic party.
You realize you're talking to a "scalawag," don't you? All four of my grandparents were from Southern Unionist Republican families!
And the hair, let’s not forget that.
I’m sure this speech wasn’t directed at anyone in particular — say, for example, the Dixie Beeotches, or those who heap awards on them because of politics. :’)
Thanks for the ping!
I’m going to have to catch this when it runs again.
Yes. I remember the bedtime tick check. Us kids had to check the dogs.
More of a metal fan myself but I do respect Jeff and his speech was 0% PC and right on the money.
It’s on youtube-type in “Jeff Foxworthy on country music”
