Interesting observation. I recently actually tried previously to feed them only twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Let them eat their fill of either dry or canned (I always gave both), but there were some difficulties. First, no matter how long I fed them in advance before I left and long before dinnertime came about (except on the days I was late) they would keep walking about Me, rubbing against Me, jamming their furry little heads hard under My chin without let or whipping either the sides of their furry snouts or those upthrust feather-duster tails uner My nose and across My lips causing Me to pull away to rub the suddenly itchy nose and sputter in indignation, or they would just spend all of the time staring into My face making it impossible to work with the occasional patting with an outstretched forepaw at whatever part of My face they could reach from My lap and occasionally mewing plaintively... until I finally give in and just go feed them -and the instant I push the chair back and stand up they are dashing into the kitchen in front of Me to strut and arch about their respective dishes until the food appears (and Lord help Me if I start to turn away!) *groan*

Plus this one time I was really, really late and came home to find that either or both of them had jumped up to the counter and on top of the refrigerator trying to get into the cabinet where their bag of dry food was being stored and EVERYTHING (no they did not manage to get into the bag) was all over the floor! *rolls eyes* (I started putting the bag in the upper cabinet because one or both figured out how to get to it in the bottom cabinet and chewed it open one night.)

*sigh*

So, if I try to go the route you suggested then I am already shaking My head thinking of the sleepless nights and stressful days of the 'poor starving kitties' routine... rather like bein married again, I must admit. *ducks* *laugh*

Your description of the "poor starving kitties" is a hoot! Aren't the little darlings endearing?!

Our girls are litter mates - one got the looks and the other got the brains. The smart one plays fetch (she taught US), opens pocket doors with her paws, and has broken into the kitchen cabinet to help herself to the kibble. She managed to open a can with a plastic snap-on lid, which really surprised us. Her sister just eats, sleeps, cuddles, preens, and leads the charge to the dinner bowl.

Late last night I saw that the recall is moving into corn gluten now. It's not being recalled in the US (yet), but has been implicated in pet deaths in South Africa. That's 3 grain products adulterated with melamine now - wheat gluten, rice protein powder, and corn gluten. There was never a better time to start preparing our own pet food - even if imperfectly.
