One of Paul Wolfowitz’s two deputies on Wednesday urged the World Bank president to resign as the civil war inside the institution reached top management.
Graeme Wheeler, managing director, made his call in front of all the bank’s top officials at an extraordinary session of their regular weekly meeting.
It is understood that other top managers of vice-president rank also suggested Mr Wolfowitz should go.
But Mr Wolfowitz – who has been under growing pressure following revelations that he was personally involved in securing a big pay rise as part of a secondment package to the US state department for his girlfriend Shaha Riza – told the meeting he had no intention of quitting.
Asked whether he denied that Mr Wheeler had told Mr Wolfowitz to resign, Marwan Muasher, vice-president for external affairs, said: “I do not comment on private meetings inside the bank.”
Within hours of Mr Wheeler’s call for Mr Wolfowitz to go in the interests of the bank, its regional teams of managers were taking sides.
Those from the bank’s Latin America region expressed strong support for Mr Wheeler’s position and agreed to threaten to resign en mass if Mr Wolfowitz stayed. The East Asia and South Asia management teams also appeared to side with Mr Wheeler and against Mr Wolfowitz.
Meanwhile, the Africa and Middle East managers looked to be siding with Mr Wolfowitz.
The fissure that has opened at the top of the bank mirrors a gaping divide throughout the institution between Wolfowitz loyalists and the majority of officials who were there under his predecessor, Jim Wolfensohn.
The regions leaning in favour of Mr Wolfowitz are headed by officials appointed to vice-president rank by him; the regions leaning against him are headed by vice-presidents from the Wolfensohn bank.

She is not his concubine. She is a well-respected professional with 20 years service at the Bank at the time Wolfowitz was appointed its President. But if you want to make judgments based on lies be my guest. If you don’t you can check FR for editorials from the WSJ and articles by people like Chris Hitchens on this topic. The phony baloney story was begun by the Financial Times and has been well-debunked with the release this weekend of all the relevant documents—hyperlinked on a piece by Fox also posted here.

My comment was about the hypocrisies of the media and media consumers who suck them up. Consider occurrences like that of Murdoch (Fox News). Most of the politicians and businessmen I’ve met had quite a few wives each and paid them off to according to our contemporary romanesque system to legitimize their actions. One State assemblyman had eight wives and a multitude of kids.
But if Riza and Wolfowitz didn’t have sex and the alleged pay raise wasn’t about that, then they stand morally above most. I’m not doubting that as the situation, given your correction.
He should have yanked Tajikistan’s aid as well, they have less publicized human rights violations that are nevertheless disgusting. But he didn’t yank them, he only went after the clowns in uzbekistan. My favorite of his project yankings was one in argentina where he declared that the salaries of the low-income workers ‘excessive.’ Oh, interesting, coming from him!

It appears that the majority of your posts are about Paul Wolfowitz. Doesn’t that strike you as bit odd?
I’ll be even more open about what I have in mind on the topic. I’ve seen quite a few situations like that of a young UPS (parcel service) worker—a young man who was known to be trying to be righteous.
While he was working, the young man’s wife had admittedly found another man and decided to divorce her husband (reportedly not forbidden for those of us in the nations by courts but generally “abhorrent” according to authority, correct me as my respected teacher, if I’m wrong). ...no complaints from her about her husband. They had children.
After the judge ordered him to pay “child support” in the amount of half of his pay, the man-haters who ran his UPS office found out about his separation situation and fired him. A father who tried to be righteous was disposed of and alienated from his children. That sort of thing happens very often—even in Israel.
Most of our leaders are allowed to have harems (even looked up to), but men like Wolfowitz and enormous numbers of lesser paid employees are dragged down with accusations of the same behavior.
