Yes, but the Name Jesus cause a lot more conviction
than “the man upstairs”. The man upstairs is generic
for those who don’t know who Jesus REALLY is.
I’ll be picky about Jesus if I want to because
he “picked” me. OK? :>)

This is quite a generic term, though it does seem to convey a few noteworthy points:

1) there is at least an acknowledgement that there is an “upstairs” (noteworthy in our materialistic culture)
2) the person upstairs is a MAN (noteworthy in our feminized culture)
3) it’s important to be on good terms with said “man upstairs” (noteworthy in our self-centered culture)

Beyond that, I’d take a bit more comfort in knowing that a potential president had the utmost fear and respect for the Creator of the Universe, but, I can’t conclude that Thompson does not have the utmost fear and respect for God just because he used a colloquial term for Him.
